Awkoder’s ‘Nightrain’

Awkoder

Prepare for some stormy night moods of epic proportions from French producer Awkoder.

His latest tune, ‘Nightrain’ is pure midnight. A peice of moody SynthWave that sounds exactly like it says on the tin. this is the sound of electronic night-time rain. A dark soulful track with a deep Italo bassline and enigmatic chords that conjure up that midnight feeling. ‘Nightrain’ is just the latest of a string on amazing tunes from this Frenchman who’s jams have such a soul and passion to them. The moment in ‘Nightrain’ when the distant vocals and lead come in is a beat of pure power.

Miami Nights 1984’s second album

miami nights 1984

In the early hours of the morning, when the only folk out and about were the nighthawks and the freaks, SynthWave legend Miami Nights 1984 released his sophomore album, his follow up to 2010’s ‘Early Summer’ on Rosso Corsa Records.

Titled ‘Turbulence’ this is one release that has been eagerly, eagerly, awaited around electronic rumors towers and from the intro peice of ‘MN84 theme’ onward it doesn’t disappoint. The albums first track proper, ‘Clutch’ is the prefect opener, and the perfect signpost for what to expect within the rest of the record. Robotic Italo grooves layered with lush emotional, synths, tracks that tell a story and take you along on that narrative and soaring synth solos that take tracks stratospheric. This is the ‘80’s repacked to rock both modern dancefloors and modern minds. It would be hard to pick standout tracks amongst the 12 that make up ‘Turbulence’ as they are all stormers, and there’s a variety of moods contained within. You’ve got your big power driving tracks like ‘Ocean Drive’ and ‘ Phone Tag‘ that truly exemplify Outrun Electro, there are ‘get in the car and drive into the night’ tunes. Then there’s the quitter, more atmospheric peices, such as ‘Astral Projection’. Where this album differs from the SynthWave classic ‘Early Summer’ is the injection of late 80’s, early’90’s dance music influences in the form of FM post-House basslines and orchestral hits on tracks like ‘Streets Of Fire’, we’ve made no apologies in the past about being orchestral hit lovers ,so this new facet of Miami Nights 1984 is definitely welcome. For me, the album centrepiece, ‘New Tomorrow’ sums up what ‘Turbulence’ is doing, it’s an evocative, rich peice in the place where Italo and ‘80’s electronic TV music meet. Emotional, yet danceable. Nostalgic, yet contemporary. The Germans call it SynthWave, The Rosso Corsa crew have always called it Outrun, In LA they invented Dreamwave just to be able to call it something. The retro synth scene has never really found a tag that has stuck, but I don’t think they care, but if there isn;t a name that expresses the scene as a whole, then at least there is an album, ‘Turbulence’ is the archetypal  SynthWave album, it just sums up everything about retro, soundtrack influenced, synth music now, and where it;s headed in the future.

Goldroom reMixes Alpine

Alpine

Binary head honcho Josh Legg, A.K.A. Goldroom has been excitedly touting his latest reMix. Apparently reMixing one of his favourite new bands, Alpine,’s ‘Hands’ was tons of fun.

The original version of ‘Hands’ is a chilled out slice of IndiePop which, in Goldroom’s hands becomes a smooth piece of marina Disco. The rolling rhythm and House piano riff really make this track giving the track a kinetic feel that works as part of it’s laid back beach Disco vibe rather than against it. So you get a smooth Tropical jam that constant feels like it’s moving forward. Presented in this way the vocals from the original seem to take on an otherworldly characteristic, almost like icy Scandinavian ElectroPop but more woven into the warmth of Goldroom’s track.

Goldroom reMixed by Follow Me

goldroom

The mysterious Follow Me is back once again, so soon after the sweet ‘A Mission Nocturnal’ they follow up with this late night reMix of Goldroom’s ‘Angeles’.

Apparently the conditions for this smooth Disco reMix was that it was “Made with all analog gear on our spaceship 37,000 years in the Ancient Future Past, hovering over the Post-Apocalyptic Californian Islands.”. Frankly, how they made something so smooth under such harsh conditions is amazing. The guys drops a slick, laid back, bass groove and then just let Josh’s hazy vocals wash over the beat while they layer on blankets of dreamlike synths, undulating in and out of the track. Follow Me are definitely shaping up to be a name to keep a serious eye on.

80s Stallone’s ‘Out Of The Water’

80s Stallone

Here’s some atmospheric and nostalgic synthesizer work from retro synth genius 80s Stallone in the form of his latest track ‘Out Of The Water’.

We’re loving the vintage drum machine sounds in this one, the provide a nice robotic Yazoo-esque SynthPop backing for a track full of mystery. Mr. Stallone lets dreamlike riffs weave in and out of each other and swirl around an Italo bassline making beautiful, rich layers of sound. It’s quite understatedly majestic too, like the soundtrack to the shimmering city lights of a dystopian metropolis.

Mr. Mæn’s new tune

Mr. Mæn

Norway’s Mr. Mæn is back with a brand new tune, one again proving that this guy is a dark horse, underestimated, watch out for Mr. Mæn, he’s suddenly going to be huge.

‘Handiclap’ is a smooth slice of SynthWavey Cosmic Disco that grounds you with a solid Moog Funk groove and a Disco beat, but soon sends you into orbit with some luscious retro synths and jazzy solos. There’s a little Jean-Michel Jarre in there too with it’s thick Sci-Fi atmosphere. Mr. Mæn has been quietly pushing out amazing reMixes and originals for months now, it might be time for him to step into the spotlight soon.

The Penelopes reMixed by The Flight (& Edwin Van Cleef)

The Penelopes

Quirky French ElectroPop duo The Penelopes release their new single at the beginning of next month. ‘Sally In The Galaxy’ is an uplifting, catchy track with a package that comes loaded with ace reMixes.

Producers of the original version, The Flight, who apparently have zero web-presence, drop their ‘Galactic’ reMix and it’s a fittingly title slab of Cosmic Disco. Weighing in heavy with their vocoders and sweet soaring synths The Flight, who still apparently have zero web-presence, strip the gangly Indie side of the track out, layer on their own Sci-Fi funk and what remains is a smooth beach Disco track fit for chilling on the Shores of Orion. It’s a nice contrast to the original’s fuzzy French Indie/Disco soundclash Pop sound. Both are equally infectious.
