[Download] DNKL’s ‘Hunt’

DNKL

This one has been languishing at the bottom of out inbox this week sometimes that happens when your being inundated minute by minute, but we’re very glad it didn’t pass up by completely. It’s the début track from an enigmatic Sweedish trio called DNKL. We guess, in the tradition of removing vowels from your band name, that DNKL could be pronounced ‘Dankel’, ‘Dinkel’ or ‘Donkel’. We’re going to go with ‘Dinkel’, ‘cos it makes us chuckle.

The track is called Hunt, and it’s a glorious slice of post-Chillwave ElectroPop with some of the most intoxicating, warping synth bass you’ll hear this side of a mid-80s movie soundtrack. The wonderful bass aside, Hunt is a brooding and deeply emotional four minutes of cinematic SynthPop. Haunting and atmospheric, Hunt never crosses the line into dark, melancholic maybe, but embodying a kind of optimism, it’s waves of hazy chords and razor sharp leads conjuring the beautiful rather than the ominous. It’s all very Sweedish, that mixture of icy Scandinavian synths and intimate, human vocals, and we love it. And that bass truly is mesmerising.

[Audio] Trevor Something’s ‘All Night’

Trevor Something

Mancunian artist Trevor Something is something of an cypher. A SynthPop singer/songwriter who’s bio if loaded with 80s references, to an overpowering extent. Mr. Something really want’s you to know he’s all about the greatest decade. But on listening to the music, whilst there is an obvious and distinct Futurist and Post-Punk influence, we can’t help but feel that Trevor Something has more in common with the Chillwavers of this world than the SynthWave/Dreamwave or 80s revivalist crowds. Not that that is, at all, a bad thing.

Take is tune All Night, it’s a lush, swirling, reverb drenched electronic dream. Obviously, the 80s references are all there, the Dave Gahan tone to the vocals, the B-Boy beats in the breakdown, the melancholy harmonies playing against a catchy chorus, but there’s an overall vibe that would see Trevor Something sitting more comfortably on a label like Cascine than Rosso Corsa. All Night is a hypnotic and intoxicating track that demands repeated listening. The pairing of the deep pulsating bass and the hazy synths and machine beat deliver an odd combination of the robotic and the soulful, with the vocals playing a big part in the latter. Trevor Something is definitely a name to keep an eye on.

[Audio] Jensen Sportag’s ‘Rain Code’

JensenSportag_photobyDabneyMorris

Rain Code is the third taster you’ve got from Nashville space cadets Jensen Sportag’s forthcoming, and amazing, début album, Stealth Of Days. That’s now three opportunities you’ve had to revel in this duo’s mysterious, romantic, dreamlike musical world before the records release on Cascine next month. You should be well excited by now, if you’re not than there’s a chance you’ve actually been listening to something else. We’ve been listening to the new Jensen Sportag album, if you have not then it sucks to be you.

Rain Code has an oddly onomatopoeic title. Which is probably a completely fatuous use of the word onomatopoeic but it really does sound, in some way, like rain code (whatever rain code is). Kinda’ gently, yet imposing. Complex and delicate. The beauty of rain and the intricacies of code. Totally captivating, and it’ll make the ladies wet (I can’t believe I just wrote that!). Huddle under your digital umbrella and prepare for a slight chance of electric piano, gusts of warm synth, ghostly yet human vocal showers and a force five chillnado.

[MP3] Box Of Wolves reMixes Goldroom’s ‘Embrace’

goldroom_thumb_thumb

Since Goldroom gave away the stems to the lead track of his latest EP, Embrace, we are expecting an almighty flood of reMix to be hitting our inbox any time now. Before the inevitable happens, let’s get in some quality and have a look at what our boy Box Of Wolves, Canadian Chilly-Disco producer extraordinaire has come up with.

Box Of Wolves take on the track is suitable rich and textured. Laid back in it’s approach, it’s like a warm blanket of beats and snyths. For Box Of Wolves, it shows off a surprisingly Housey beat, but one that works really well to underpin the washes of dreamy pads and electric piano. The vocals take on a new, hazy, quality when coupled with this soundtrack and you’re left with something you could equally dance to or chill to.

Well, the countdown clock has started. We are now on the home straight to the November release of Nashville synthetic dreamers Jensen Sportag’s long awaited début album, Stealth Of Days. We don’t wanna’ boast or anything, but we’ve had our hands on the album for a while now, and it’s served as the prefect soundtrack to the end of the summer, it really is a piece of work that is worth the wait. The awesome Cascine have outdone themselves with this one.

Right about now, you can grab yourself another taster of what to expect. Following on from Bellz, a track the released just over a month ago, wrap your ears around Under The Rose, the kind of track that makes your legs go all wobbly. Impending wheelchair bound status aside, the track flows along it’s own ChillPop R&B stream, bringing with it plucked guitar and rampant slap bass alongside undulating dunes of synths. This is the kind of tune that looks right into your soul, resonating with your mood, and then says “nah…your soul’s well boring, let’s go dancing”. And does. Better than you.

[Audio] Pilotpriest’s ‘Drunk Dial’

pilotpriest_thumb

It’s been a little while since we heard from Canadian soundtrack Electro master Pilotpriest, but this week he quietly let slip otu a brand new track on his SoundCloud page. Featuring fellow Torontonian YongeBlood, who’s turned-in a couple of reMixes for Pilotpriest in the past, Drunk Dial is a new endeavour for Pilotpriest, a swirling, dare we say it, Chillwavey, ElectroPop tune that demands repeated listens.

Putting his core soundtrack talents to good use, Pilotpriest keeps things epic and emotional with big orchestrated synths and layers and layers of texture while ghostly vocals float in and out of focus around the track. Powered by a solid House beat the track mixes groove with atmosphere and the end result is pretty compelling. We’re not sure if this is a new direction for Pilotpriest, or just a stretching of his musical muscles, either way, he’s done a top job here.

[MP3] Box Of Wolves’ ‘Two Of Us’

Box Of Wolves

Late last week, that Canadian purveyor of all things DreamPop Box Of Wolves served up a brand new tune. We know of some quite exciting thing approaching in Box Of Wolves pipeline, but until then this kind of gloriously breezy ElectroPop is just the ticket to tide us over.

Two Of Us is a swirling, synthesizer fantasy. A reverb drenched symphony of ghostly sounds and twinkling melodies with the ghostly fragments of a voice we believe we recognise drifting in and out of the soundscape. Box Of Wolves captures a nostalgic innocence in all his music, but it’s particularly shown off here, the music equivalent of warm summer evenings.  We’ll be bring you another stunning Box Of Wolves single on electronic rumours (the label) in the coming months, keep an eye out for it, it’s a corker!
