Goin’ Old School: Imagination, Front 242 & Tangerine Dream

Goin’ Old School isn’t a trip down music memory lane, it’s a mugging in the dark alleyway of nostalgia:

First up is some seriously smooth early ‘80’s, 1982 to be exact, electronic Soul from Imagination and their classic ‘Just An illusion’.

In the starkest contrast possible we have Front 242, with arguably their Poppiest song, ‘Tragedy For You’ from 1989.

And finally some relaxing, experimental, tones from Tangerine Dream’s ‘Tiergarten’ from 1985. Actually the flip side to ‘Le Parc’, one of the greatest synth tracks ever written.

Early Warp goodness from Richard H Kirk’s Sweet Exorcist moniker with some ace Bleep House in 1989’s ‘Testone’. Jarvis Cocker directed the video!

Try Squash Gang’s ‘I Want An Illusion’ from 1986 for some pure Euro Italo goodness.

Don’t ask me why Curiosity Killed The Cat’s 1986 hit ‘Down To Earth’ is here, I was just in the mood.

Rebeka’s ‘Stars’ video

Rebeka’s ‘Stars’ will be the next release on Discotexas. This Polish duo make eclectic ElectroPop the likes of which we are starting to see a resurgence of. And I’m quite looking forward to the summer of quirky DiscoPop.

Check out the video for their début, its a suitably glittery affair for the Mirror People produced tune. Balbina Bruszewska & Katarzyna Baraniewicz directed.

‘Stars’ is released 20th April on Discotexas with reMixes from Punks Jump Up.

Strangers ‘Shine On you’ video

London SynthPoppers Strangers’ new single ‘Shine On You’ has finally gone and got itself a video! I’m glad it did, it’s definitely a track deserved of visuals.

Tom Doran directs this clip, with an epic visual style to match the majestic sound of the track. ‘Shine On You’ truly is anthemic  and the video does it;s best to live up to that.

‘Shine On You’ is out this week on Killing Moon Limited/Beatwolf Records.

Walter Sobcek’s ‘Hollywood Cries’ video

Walter Sobcek have just put together a video for the track ‘Hollywood Cries’, taken from their awesome ‘Miami’ EP of last year.

The B-side to the title track of the EP, ‘Hollywood Cries’ was no less impressive slick Dreamwave. Lazy La nights brilliance with a passing nod to Bronski Beat. The video, a homage to lives crushed by the Hollywood meat grinder is pretty brutal viewing.

Rüfüs’ ‘This Summer’ video

Aussie Indie-Electro rising starts Rüfüs’ ‘This Summer’ finally has gone and got itself a video, not sure what it’s been doing with it’s time before this that was so important though?

Alexander George directs this collection of youths-loosing-themselves-in-good-times-and-getting-a-bit-rowdy-in-slow-motion clip which, whilst being a tad unoriginal, actually looks really nice and works perfectly with the track.

Rüfüs’ EP that contains ‘This Summer’ is out now on Gigpiglet/Inertia .

Squarepusher’s new single

Glitch superstar Squarepusher is back with a new album, ‘Ufabulum’ and this new single and video for it’s lead track ‘Dark Steering’.

I’ll admit I’ve been quite partial to Squarepusher’s IDM in the past, when he’s not getting too Drill & Bass and I found ‘Dark Steering’ pleasantly surprising for three reasons. 1) It exists 2) The video is slick as all hell 3) It’s wonderfully melodic.

‘Ufabulum’ is released 14th May on Warp, natch.

It’ll always come back to The Human League, that’s a promise. Here’s ‘(Keep Feeling) Fascination’ from 1983’s ‘Fascination!’ EP.

From 1988 it’s Coldcut’s first collaboration with singer Yazz in ‘Doctorin’ The House’. Horns!

Remember when Prince wasn’t batshit insane? Stuff like this happened! Here’s Prince And The Revolution with 1984’s ‘Let’s Go Crazy’.

Futurecop!’s ‘Starworshipper’ video

At the end of last week we gave you a listen to Futurecop! new, and actually first, single. The Diana Gen and Starrset featuring ‘Starworshipper’.

Well, get your eyes around the video to. There’s a lot of Futurecop! clips on YouTube, but this is their first, official, especially filmed promo and director AJ Jackson does a really good job of capturing the essence of Futurecop!’s youthful, optimistic ethos.

Kimbra, Foster The People & A-Trak

Kimbra, Mark Foster from Foster The People & A-Trak have all done a track together. It’s something to do with shoes. Converse are doing this ‘3 artists, 1 song’ series, I’m not really sure what it’s all about and all the information about it seems to assume I already do. Apologies for not being up to date on the goings on in the world of music based shoe PR campaigns.

The track is very very very good though. Surprisingly for this kind of collaboration you can really hear each artists influence and the result is an Electro-edgy Pop track that rises above it’s ‘shoe promo’ origins.
