Goin’ Old School: just the Pet Shop Boys

Goin’ Old School isn’t a trip down music memory lane, it’s a mugging in the dark alleyway of nostalgia:

Pet Shop Boys’ new single ‘Winner’ is out today, it’s awesome stuff that we will bring you one their label sort their lives out, but today we’ll dedicate Going’ Old School to Britain’s finest SynthPop duo, starting with 1986’s Opportunities (Let’s Make Lots Of Money).

The tail end of the ‘80’s with Domino Dancing from 1988.

And the utter classic from  1987, It’s A Sin.

Birkii’s ‘Holy War’ reMixes (with Pégase)

Birkii

Parisian ElectroPop chanteuse Birkii’s Holy War single was released this week. We took a look at the original and Reflex’s storming reMix last week, now the EP is out we can check out some of the accompanying mixes. It’s quite an eclectic line up of quirky ElectroPop reMixes that makes for an interesting package.

Pégase is up first with a wonderful mixture of ‘80’s sounds and a ‘50’s vibe, it’s really like nothing you’ve heard before but works really well, especially with a track like this. On the surface it’s quite typical of French ElectroPop, slightly left field with a Indie sensibility, but it;s got the almost Rockabilly swing to it that gives it a unique flavour. Pol Rax delivers a pulsating retro synth mix that folds in elements of Italo and SynthWave into it’s spikey ElectroPop, very ‘80’s synths on this one. Also brining a retro feel to their mix is Zemaria. This Brazilian producer turns in a tune with a sweet ‘80’s DiscoPop style. With a nice amount of groove and a big cosmic chorus Zemaria’s mix is kind enough to include some vocoding for us. Thanks.

Santigold’s ‘The Keepers’ video

Here’s the video for Santigold’s new single, The Keepers. A driving, politically and socially charged, ElectroPop track and one that is infectiously catchy with it’s message.

Santi White herself directed the clip, which I think manages to get across some of what she is saying in the song.

The Keepers is out now.

80s Stallone’s ‘Radioactive’

80s Stallone

One of the UK finest purveyors of all things Synth and Dreamwave 80s Stallone has premiered a new track, or new demo., of blissed out, summery, retro sounds.

Radioactive, is the kind of track that washes over you like waves of a deserted shore. the reverb washed arpeggios that weave in and out of this track make for a beautiful, almost otherworldly, sound. A simple, yet infectious bassline grounds the track allowing loads of room for the rich synthetic textures to paint a sonic picture. The way the arpeggios play with the bassline give the tune a nice rhythm. this is as beachy and laid back as SynthWave gets. Enjoy!”

Buro Lamp&Kap directs the clip, a voyeuristic trip though decaying spaces, a fitting match for the dark robotic beats. There some shiny balls too!

NeonFlashDrive’s ‘Dark City’

NeonFlashDrive

Here’s the new tune from UK SynthWave producer NeonFlashDrive, a brooding slice of electronic soundtrack work inspired by the 1987 animé Wicked City. Even though Wicked City is pretty horror based, what NeonFlashDrive has done with this tune is capture the vibe of what was, in our opinion, the golden age of Cyberpunk animé. This track could have quite as easily been influenced by Bubblegum Crisis, Appleseed, Armitage III, Akira or Ghost In The Shell.

Built around ominous synth pad that immediately install a dark future mood, NeonFlashDrive soon takes us on a sonic journey through a neon soaked dystopia with Dark City. With nods to Italo and SynthPop in it’s driving arpeggios, digital bass and haunting, ringing, melodies. Don’t think it’s all mysterious soundtrack stuff, this track’s got a groove to it too!

Nude Disco reMixes The Nolans

The Nolans

Yes. You read that headline right. I honestly don’t know that to tell you, London’s Nude Disco is just like that.

Vern claims that if he didn’t do it, then somebody else would have sooner or later, we’re not so sure. Only history will be the judge of whether taking The Nolans’ 1980 hit Who’s Gonna’ Rock You? and turning into a massive filtered Disco floorfiller is a stroke of madcap genius or just plain insanity. Ah, what the hell, it’s awesome! Have a good weekend!

Avec Sans

Avec Sans

Got the heads up about this over on Breaking More Waves, on of the UKs best, and most passionate, music blogs. Robin at BMW predicts that London ElectroPop duo Avec Sans will soon have the music blogosphere’s tongues wagging, and he could very well be right. So let’s start the ball rolling.

Avec Sans are Alice Fox and Jack St James who, after a seriously classy cover of Bon Iver’s Perth, have dropped this début tune, the amazingly titled Heartbreak Hi. Amazingly titled ‘cos not only is it a reference to casually greeting heartbreak, but also sounds like an awesome Australian teen drama from the early ‘90’s. Now that’s wordplay! The track itself is glorious, rousing slice of razor sharp ElectroPop. With a very slight Industrial quality to it, that is tempered by Alice Fox’s impassioned vocals. It’s rare for a new ElectroPop act to come along and sound so polished and mature from the get-go. Avec Sans are going to do big things, mark my words.

Mitch Murder’s ‘Daybreak’

Mitch Murder

Hot on the heels of his recent MARS EP, which was hot on the heels of his awesome Current Events album, comes this new hot track from SynthWave legend (Yes. I said legend. What?) Mitch Murder. All that being hot on the heels stuff must be pretty hard to keep up with, but Mr. Murder keeps releasing tune after tune that literally blows 95% of his peers out of the water. When Mitch drops a new SynthWave track, it;s in a totally different ballpark.

Daybreak is his latest offering, captures the good vibes of Tropical Disco and the sunrise euphoria of Balearic House, takes those feelings and applies them to his deeply musical SynthWave. The ability to conjure a mood in music, and to let that music resonate the mood back to the listener is on of Mitch Murders biggest strengths, and here the man delivers the ambience of sunrises, deserted beaches, waves lapping at their shores. Not a place Mitch has taken us to before, but one he handles with effortless perfection. This is synthesizer art, Mitch paint a aural picture for the listener with rich synth textures.
