[Audio] FM-84’s ‘Neon Sunrise’

FM-84

We’ve been sent a few tracks by FM-84 recently that have quite impressed up (not enough time in the day to write about everything though); but this new one, Neon Sunrise, is his best to date. FM-84 is a Scot by the name of Colin Bennett who currently resides in San Francisco where he turned his production attention to SynthWave late last year. His tunes have been getting steadily better, to the point where Neon Sunrise had us hooked from the first beat.

The reason being that this beat kicks. A powerful mixture of 80s Pop and B-Boy beats provides a rock solid backing for waves of densely layered synth work. Awash with thick pads and starlight melodies, Neon Sunrise serves up a plethora of uplifting and euphoric retro sounds. If this doesn’t put a nostalgic smile on your face you may be a little wrong inside. You might want to see someone about that. Meanwhile, us right thinking people will be eagerly awaiting the next tune from FM-84.

[Audio] Maethelvin’s ‘Lost In Big City’

Maethelvin

Complete surprise! Out of nowhere, pioneer of the Dreamwave and SynthWave sound, and Valerie collective O.G., Maethelvin has released an album! Save for a solitary track in 2013 we though we’d heard the last from one of our favourite artists of the time back in 2012. Maethelvin was a staple of the Valerie crew since the beginning, back in 2007 but never properly released anything other than a limited edition 7” with Stephen Falken. His new record is called CS005, being part of Valerie’s Composer series and is out this week. The album pretty much collects all his original tunes, some previously hard to find, in one place; we’re so excited to be listening to a full length record from this guy.

Lost In A Big City originally appeared on the absolute legendary classic compilation album Valerie And Friends back in 2009. Quintessentially Dreamwave, this is the prefect example of the sound that stared it all. Punchy beats and gritty, cinematic apreggios drive this powerhouse of a track underneath catchy little Synth Funk melodies. Walking the line between abrasive, high-octane Electro and Disco-fuelled SynthPop, Lost In Big City exemplifies Maethelvin’s, and the original SynthWave, sound

[Download] Jordan F reMixes Midnight Pool Party’s ‘Stay’

Midnight Pool Party

Aussie Indie-Popsters Midnight Pool Party’s current single Stay has received a massive makeover from the undisputed reigning champ of Australian SynthWave, Mr. Jordan F. It;s been a while since we’ve had anything from this groover, but he’s delivered a right old sunshine beast with this new reMix. Check it out below.

From the offset, this one is all about warm and dreamy synths that glide with ease over a buoyant bassline. This is probably the furthest away from his SynthWave roots that Jordan has reached so far. It is, in essence, a glorious Topical Disco jam with a twist of retro in the bass and lead synth departments. Find work from Mr. F here, blending his summertime jam with the originals vocals effortlessly, and definitely one you should be cracking open when the sun comes out.

[Download] Teeel reMixes The New Division’s ‘Senseless’

the-new-division

Not for the first time New Jersey’s hardest working synth-head Teeel is taking on the challenge of reMixing LA Indie-Electro outfit New Division. These guys have swapped reMixes a couple of time and the latest of these exchanges sees Teeel working his magic on The New Divisions’ current single, Senseless, which was released earlier this month.

Teeel’s take on Senseless is a cascading synthetic affair.  Layers upon Layers of bristling arpeggios and buzzing bass wash over each other, taking time to settle in before Teeel re-introduced the original’s anthemic vocals. Stripping out the Indie side of the track, this one is pure SynthPop, a sprawling track whose expansive synths match the cavernous vocals perfectly.

[Audio] Happiness Cage’s ‘Image Crystal’

Happiness Cage

There’s a new tune from Happiness Cage, the more experimental alter-ego of Irish SynthWaver Ciarán Byrne A.K.A. Adeyhawke. We always eagerly await the next Adeyhawke tune, but in the meantime Happiness Cage serves up something a bit more cerebral, giving you something to think about while you’re resting your feet from dancing to Adeyhawke tunes. This latest one is called Image Crystal.

With patterns built on field recordings Ciarán made on his travels Image Crystal creates an organic soundscape peppered with lilting synths that drift through the sonic landscape. Calling to mind some of Autechre’s more emotive moments, Image Crystal is a beautiful and evocative four minute experience.
