Chromatics’ ‘Back From The Grave’

Here’s the latest track and video showcased from Chromatics forthcoming new album ‘Kill For Love’.

‘Back From The Grave’ was, again, directed by Alberto Rossini and despite the title and content, is a lot Poppier and catchier than it sounds.

‘Back From The Grave’ is taken from Chromatics’ forthcoming second Italians Do It Better album, ‘Kill For Love’.

New music from Parallels

parallels

Oh hell yeah! Toronto’s finest, Parallels, are back in the game!

The Canadian SynthPop duo have announced the June release of their second album, ‘XII’, the follow up to their stunning début, ‘Visionaries’. The first track to see the light of day from the album is ‘Moonlight Desires’, actually a cover of Canadian ‘80’s artist Gowen, a bright, shiny SynthPop dream. Apparently the new album won’t be as dark as ‘Visionaries’, but if this track is anything to go by it’ll be awesome. The shimmering synths in ‘Moonlight Desires’ are more ‘80’s and Playful than in the slightly more aggressive tracks on ‘Visionaries’ but we think that’ll make for a nice companion album.

‘XII’ is due out 26th June.

Kids At Midnight’s new single

kids at midnight

Kids At Midnight’s long awaited début single for Vulture Music is released today, we spoke about how the anticipation for this release has killed us and gave you a listen to one of the reMixes yesterday, today you can wrap your ears around the lead track.

‘Let You Slide’ is a revelation. It’s not the full on DancePop track we was expecting, and I’m glad. Maybe we just got used to tracks featuring Jane but in the back out our minds we we’d assumed the single would be some big Nu-Disco-esque track. It isn’t, and that’s awesome ‘cos I’m utterly enamoured with that it actually is. So what is it? Well, and I’m sure no-one is going to thank me for saying this, the first thing that popped in my head was female-fronted-The-Postal-Service (which for me is rad, I loved The Postal Service). It’s less glitch but has a very similar tone to it. It feels personal and intimate. Led by toms and an organ it’s, musically, a gentle affair, concentrating on moving your heart rather than your feet, slowly layering and building as the intensity of Jane’s vocals increases. Jane’s vocals too, aren’t the big dance diva  power vox we’re used to, this a more introspective Jane and one who’s totally emotionally believable.  ‘No No Yeah Yeah’, on the flip side, is a more traditional SynthPop offering that I prefer to it’s reMix. It’s a nice meeting of elements of Bedroom Pop, Indie-Electro and LA Dreamwave in a package that is pretty unique. Less personal that ‘Let It Slide’, ‘No No Yeah Yeah’ is more geared toward summer good time, it;s a track for driving with the top down and makes a perfect complimentary track. ‘Let You Slide’/’No No Yeah Yeah’ is a stunning début, challenging expectations and creating something beautiful with it.

Strangers’ new single

strangers

London SynthPop troupe Strangers are back with their first single of 2012, and they are kicking off the year in bombastic style.

Like their previous works, ‘Shine On You’ encapsulates that particularly ‘80’s contradictory mix of deep melancholy and uplifting hopefulness. Everything about Strangers’ sound is getting bigger and bigger, more euphoric. Powerful drums, huge chords and sparkling synths make up this giant SynthPop anthem. Whereas to date Strangers could have easily draw comparisons to HURTS, now it feels like there is something of The Sound Of Arrows in the mix, and the combination of the moody Dark Pop and the explosion of optimistic childlike wonder makes for a really compelling, emotional and satisfying music experience. this could easily be Strangers’ mainstream breakthrough.

Goin’ Old School: Eurythmics, Bronski Beat, Art Of Noise & Max Headroom

Goin’ Old School isn’t a trip down music memory lane, it’s a mugging in the dark alleyway of nostalgia:

ZZT experimentalists The Art Of Noise teamed up with the best thing on TV in 1986, Max Headroom, and released ‘Paranoimia’, an ode to Max’s insanity.

Future basslines and vocoding in Eurythmics ‘Sexcrime (Nineteen Eighty Four)’, the soundtrack to the movie adaptation of Orwell’s Nineteen Eighty-Four, in, well, 1984.

Sommerville era Bronski Beat best tune, 1984’s ‘Why?’.

Let Em Riot

Let Em Riot

Let Em Riot is a project out of Orange County who’s music is electronic Pop in the best tradition of ‘80’s teen movie soundtrack fodder.

His latest tune, ‘Lovers And Losers’, the first taste of his forthcoming début full length record, is a wonderfully nostalgic affair.  Shot through with that strain of melancholy that signifies all the best ‘80’s anthems, this slice of SynthPop whist keeping things Poppy and danceable. Let Me Riot has really nailed the retro Pop sound, without resorting to cheese or parody ‘Lovers And Losers’ is epic , passionate Pop music to soundtrack your teenage heartbreaks.

Baron Von Luxxury’s ‘The Last Seduction’

Baron Von Luxxury

Blake Robin A.K.A. Baron Von Luxxury has been creeping around, injecting classic sounding tracks and reMixes into out consciousness for a while now and this week saw the release of his new album, ‘The Last Seduction’. Be warned, it’s ElectroPop gold!

The album seems like, I don’t mind saying, the perfect meeting of Nu-Disco and ‘80’s SynthPop, from the opening track, the Moroder stylings of ‘The Lovely Theresa’, it’s all cosmic Disco grooves and big ‘80’s choruses. there is something so addictive in the Baron’s mastery of both Funky dancefloor grooves and what can only be described as big, classic, Pop hooks. The album ranges from The Human League-esque straight-up SynthPop such as ‘Alice Underground’ to floor shaking Disco groovers like the title track. He’s roped in some help too Keenhouse contributes synth work and production here and there and returning the favour for his reMix of ‘Meddle’ Little Boots shows up on ‘That Disco Beat’, a big DiscoPop epic. To be honest I can imagine any readers of this site that I wouldn’t recommend this album to!

Infernal Devices’ ‘A Million Miles Above’ EP

Infernal Devices

Infernal Devices are a Brooklyn based duo who came together over a shared love of ‘80’s Sci-Fi and electronic music which they pout into their futuristic ElectroPop, as displayed on their forthcoming new EP ‘A Million Miles Above’.

The five track record is actually quite a strange beast, there’s a whole load of influences I can hear in there which makes me wonder how many of them are accidental. At it’s core it’s a Pop record, much if it’s structure is pure ‘80’s SynthPop, but it’s production sways from Modern SynthPop to DancePop to EuroDance, even a little SynthWave, with each track. That’s not to say it’s disjointed, it isn’t, there is a running theme of soaring, buzzing synths and impassioned vocals throughout the EP that ties it all together neatly. Some catchy tunes too, take the lead track, ‘Life In Stereo’, a track with a robotic groove tempered by a warm vocal style and an overall out that would appeal not just to SynthPop fans but fans of crossover dance too.
