Goin’ Old School: Imagination, Front 242 & Tangerine Dream

Goin’ Old School isn’t a trip down music memory lane, it’s a mugging in the dark alleyway of nostalgia:

First up is some seriously smooth early ‘80’s, 1982 to be exact, electronic Soul from Imagination and their classic ‘Just An illusion’.

In the starkest contrast possible we have Front 242, with arguably their Poppiest song, ‘Tragedy For You’ from 1989.

And finally some relaxing, experimental, tones from Tangerine Dream’s ‘Tiergarten’ from 1985. Actually the flip side to ‘Le Parc’, one of the greatest synth tracks ever written.

Early Warp goodness from Richard H Kirk’s Sweet Exorcist moniker with some ace Bleep House in 1989’s ‘Testone’. Jarvis Cocker directed the video!

Try Squash Gang’s ‘I Want An Illusion’ from 1986 for some pure Euro Italo goodness.

Don’t ask me why Curiosity Killed The Cat’s 1986 hit ‘Down To Earth’ is here, I was just in the mood.

It’ll always come back to The Human League, that’s a promise. Here’s ‘(Keep Feeling) Fascination’ from 1983’s ‘Fascination!’ EP.

From 1988 it’s Coldcut’s first collaboration with singer Yazz in ‘Doctorin’ The House’. Horns!

Remember when Prince wasn’t batshit insane? Stuff like this happened! Here’s Prince And The Revolution with 1984’s ‘Let’s Go Crazy’.

Goin’ Old School: Jan Hammer, Dorine Hollier & Julia Claire

First up is the atmospheric keytar master, Jan Hammer with 1986’s ‘Crockett’s Theme’ from Miami Vice.

Dorine Hollier’s Tonight…Crazy Night’ from198 is as epic a slice of Italo as you’ll ever hear!

From 1987 it’s Julia Claire’s ‘Cat In Disguise’, pure post-Italo EuroPop cheese. Awesome!

Goin’ Old School: Kraftwerk, New Order & Jungle Brothers

Goin’ Old School isn’t a trip down music memory lane, it’s a mugging in the dark alleyway of nostalgia:

After years in the German underground. Kraftwerk were basically saying “Hello world, here we are’ with 1982’s ‘The Model’, the coolest people in the world took notice.

New Order’s ‘Blue Monday’ from1983, still the biggest selling 12” of all time, here’s the original video.

Jungle Brothers, amongst others, in 1988 thought Hip-House was a good idea with the Todd Terry produced ‘I’ll House You’.

1982’s biggest anthem in the form of Ultravox’s ‘Hymn’. Epic!

It’s 1982, Hip Hop is about to get as cool as it ever will with  Whodini’s ‘ Magic’s Wand’.

Goin’ Old School: Afrika Bambaataa & Soul Sonic Force, Mantronix & Egyptian Lover

This week on Goin’ Old School we’re going back to one of my first love B-Boy Electro, Electro Funk, Electro Boogie or whatever you want to call it. The Problem is most of the classic cuts from back them don’t have videos, but luckily we can kick off with the quintessential Electro jam, Afrika Bambaataa & Soul Sonic Force’s ‘Planet Rock’ from 1982

We love some Mantronix round these parts, I think ‘Bassline’ from 1986 is the only classic Mantronix video we haven’t featured yet.

It’s a pity there aren’t more old Egyptian Lover videos. 1986’s Electro Funk fueled ‘Freak-A-Holic’ seems to be the only video he made back then

FM Attack reworks Richard Marx

Pure gold! One of Canada’s best synth exports and one of our favourite producers FM Attack taking on Richard Marx 1987 power ballad début ‘Should Have Known Better’.

The wavy mullet’s voice with FM Attack’s sweet retro synths is a match made in heaven. No only does FM Attack provide a slick as hell ‘80’s sounding Electro backing that works the right bits of the song at the right time, but he also liberally applies some lush vocoding to Mr. Marx’s vocals. The whole thing shows a great respect to the original track, but take it so much further, to the point where you couldn’t listen to the original again without somehow feeling that the stuff here was missing. Powerful, uplifting, nostalgic synth awesomeness.

Future basslines and vocoding in Eurythmics ‘Sexcrime (Nineteen Eighty Four)’, the soundtrack to the movie adaptation of Orwell’s Nineteen Eighty-Four, in, well, 1984.
