[Awards] The electronic rumors Awards: BEST REMIX – electronic rumors’ top 20 reMixes of 2013

Awards2013Remix

reMixes! Our first proper award of the night. The winner of this year’s Best reMix just nipped in at the last minute, being a recent release. But it was hard to deny that it was going to take the prize as soon as we heard it.

There’s so much talent in this list. It was pretty hard to stand out this year, with so many big album releases going on, reMixes seemed to fall by the wayside sometimes. Also the proliferation of the dreaded ‘reMix context’ meant listeners ears were assailed with so much junk the word ‘reMix’ began to strike fear in their hearts. Still, the cream always rises to the top, and this list really does represent the cream.

British producer Ikonika began life making melodic and intricate tunes for Hyperdub but in recent times has turned her attention to something a little more funky, and a little more retro. Her reMix of Glaswegian SynthPop saviours Chvrches’ début track, Lies, for the recently re-released reMix package is pretty much everything we want in a track. Severely focused on Boogie, the tune is all B-boy beats, orchestral stabs, squealing synth riffs and the best of 80s electronic Soul and Pop loaded up in a groove cannon and aimed squarely at contemporary dancefloors. The past month and a half have been all about this track here at electronic rumors HQ.

[Awards] The electronic rumors Awards: ELECTRONIC RUMORS’ 2013

Awards2013ER

So, the trade-off of being signed to the hugely acclaimed and trend setting electronic rumors Records is that you immediately become disqualified from placing in the prestigious electronic rumors Awards. I know, right? It’s a tough decision between being on the world’s hippest label, or being ranked in the world’s most influential charts.

Those that do decide to sign on the dotted line become part of the electronic rumors family, and although we can’t list them in our end of year round-ups (there would be far too much weird bias going on there), we can drop a couple of paragraphs about how awesome each and every one of them is and how the electronic rumors Crew’s year has been.

We kicked things off in February on the one year anniversary of the compilation that started it all, electronic rumors Volume 1, with the release of electronic rumors Volume 1: The reMix EP. Four artists who appeared on the compilation (Queen Of Hearts, Ronika, Kid Kasio & Echoes) had their compilation contributed tracks reMixes by four other artists who appeared on the compilation (Substatic, She’s The Queen, LexiconDon & beaumont). The results were ecclectic, occasionally surprising, and all-round funky as hell.

♫ Ronika – Wiyoo (Substatic reMix)

Then, completely out of the blue, came the amazing Canadian producer Box Of Wolves and his collaboration with Christa Vi, Boy. A tune that came to us at just the right time, it was exactly what we were looking for. Cool, edgy Pop with a raw Disco feel and heaps of enigmatic charm. Back with reMixes from Toronto’s Cyclist and Tongan producer Summer Occasion it was a killer release.

♫ Box Of Wolves & Christa Vi – Boy

Again, stretching out genre muscles we chanced upon London based Indie-Dreamwave duo New Arcades and hooked up with them for the release of their début, self titled EP. Being released in June, this was just what the summer ordered with six tracks of breezy, nostalgic, emotional, urban ElectroPop.

♫ New Arcades – Into The Skyline

electronic rumors’ original gangsters She’s The Queen returned in July with a double A-side single announcing to the world they had big things planned. Two storming Pop songs, in two very different styles, Cold Heart/I Don’t Wanna Know definitely sets up the New York duo for a massive 2014.

♫ She’s The Queen – Cold Heart

Disco dark horse beaumont finally let us release the Elle Pierre featuring Vampire in September. With a massive reMix line-up consisting of Clancy, StardonE, BeatLoaf and Helmut Schelsky this was our dancefloor destroying release of the year. It still sends shivers down our spines when the bassline kicks in.

♫ beaumont (Feat. Elle Pierre) – Vampire

electronic rumors staples She’s The Queen & Let Em Riot got cosy in November to release a free double A-Side single. Fantasy/There U Go featured to tracks from these talented artists archives as a little thank you to the fans who have supported them over 2013. And two storming tracks they were too. Either one could have easily been a single release in it’s own right, bt you can get both for free!

♫ Let Em Riot – There U Go

We tried to do a little good with our final release of 2013. X-Mas Rumors came out the week before X-Mas after some incredibly last minute production work from the artists as they generously leant their time to a shot notice charity EP we put together. electronic rumors newcomers Kids At Midnight joined Let Em Riot, She’s The Queen and beaumont in covering their favourite X-Mas songs with 100% of the EPs pay-what-you-want revenue going to The Alzheimer’s Society. By X-mas day we could donate a healthy chunk of change of this very worthy charity thanks to some amazing fans supporting both the music and the cause. It was the best X-Mas present we could have received.

♫ Kids At Midnight – Last Christmas

Of course the WebZine is still going strong too, against all odds, but once again we want to thank you lot. You who read. You who buy releases. You who keep us going. Without you we are all nothing, consider yourselves family too.

Things got a little hectic toward the end of 2013 so a few releases were pushed back to 2014. So as we come into the new year expect some massive stuff from Kids At Midnight, Box Of Wolves, Freak You, Ali Jamieson and The Sanfernando Sound & Kid Kasio, just for starters.

We love you all.

[Awards] The electronic rumors Awards 2013

Awards2013

So, as a hush descends over the room, conversations trail off into awes silence, the lights dim and it’s time to start the show.

With red carpet shenanigans now behind us, everybody having strutted their stuff in their finest trappings, all that’s left is impatient anticipation….

Welcome to The electronic rumors Awards 2013!

Although it now goes without saying, the following list were pant-shittingly hard to compile. What soon became clear was that 2013 was very much a year of albums. Some stunning full length records were released this year, mostly overshadowing single releases in terms of hype. It was also, weirdly, a year of emperor’s-new-clothes releases. Over-hyped marketing extravaganzas that everybody felt they had to say they liked for fear of being seen as uncool. There were a whole bunch of albums that blew up and rightly deserved it, but an equal amount that were just the product of clever PR strategies and lazy music journalism.

But, whatever. Each to their own. These are our lists anyway. Like it or not, this is what floated our boat in 2013. As ever, we probably forgot something important, overlooked something from the start of the year, but whatcha’ gonna’ do? If we have forgotten something; no-one will be more pissed than us. So let’s just not mention it, eh?

Oh. There’s the drum roll. Get comfy, we’re about it begin…

santa-plays-moog

That’s us done for the year then. No more posts until 2014.

Except, of course, for the electronic rumors Awards 2013!!! They’ll be making an appearance nearer the end of the year, but you should probably start getting excited right now!

Let me just take this opportunity to again big-up the electronic rumors X-Mas EP, X-Mas Rumors. If you haven’t already you should definitely pick up a copy, we’re raising mad bucks for the Alzheimer’s Society and giving you some X-Mas synthy goodness in the process.

So, from us here to you, have an awesome X-Mas! And we’ll see you when we’re all fat and hungover.

Have a good one!

Cheers peeps!

Chvrches

2013’s kings (and queen) of ElectroPop, Glaswegian trio Chvrches, will be kicking off 2014 with the single release of Tether. Taken from their all-comers-destroying début album, The Bones Of What You Believe, the single will come with a full reMix package that will include this slice of dancefloor euphoria from acclaimed New York DJ Junior Sanchez. This should set you up for the weekend.

Sanchez turns in an upbeat mixture of  his driving House and Chvrches sweet SynthPop. The tempo is increased, the kicks are solid, the uplifting keys are in place. This has got everything your expect from a meeting of these two entities. A six minute DJ weapon, complete with rolling snare fills and a Balearic flavour, this one b rings Chvrches straight to the dancefloor.

[Download] Ben Macklin’s ‘Can We Talk?’

Ben Macklin

One of our favourite British producers, Ben Macklin, has dropped a tasty treat just in time for X-Mas. Delivering the presents, Ben has made the track, Can We Talk?, which is taken from his forthcoming album, free to download until 25th December. Whether as part of Cassette Club or with his solo productions, Macklin always brings the warm grooves, whatever the weather.

Can We Talk? is a blistering slice of semi-Tropical Disco-y House. Filled to the rafters with chilled chords, Island melodies and a Funk that let’s you forget about your worries in life. A laid back jam fit for dancing the winter away, Can We Talk? gives the gift of rubbery bass and keys that fill you with a sense of nostalgia. This is music for the heart.

Here’s the video for Swedish Avant-Popster Ceo’s Whorehouse. An infectiously catchy slick of quirky ElectroPop we featured back in November.

The video sees Eric Berglund indulging his madcap side and basically mucking around and dressing up.

[Download] Diamond Cut reMixes Thief’s ‘Broken Boy’

Thief

The mastermind and music genius that is Diamond Cut is back this week with one of his amazing, but increasingly rare, reMixes. Lucky for us, he’s got to grips with Australian SynthPopper Thief’s Broken Boy, a tune we introduced you to back in October. Diamond Cut embraces the track’s introspective Kraftwerk-y-ness and works a little of his retro Electro magic with the song.

Dusting off the pulsating, robotic synths for this one, Diamond Cut’s Manic Computer reMix is appropriately titled, encompassing all manner of electronic shudders and blips. Thief’s vocals still work wonderfully with the music, slightly modulated they sound a little otherworldly set against the synthesizer’s shimmering retro soundtrack. Diamond Cut always delivers the very best, and often surprising, tracks. This tune is no different.
