Stay Ali

StayAli

When you hear the music of Swedish teenage trio Stay Ali and then see photos of them you immediately think “these kids made this????”.

Creating intricate electronic music with a definite Nu-Disco slant and an obvious maturity well beyond their years, Bård Ericson, Elias Smeds, and Johan Vati Grade just go to show you shouldn’t judge a book by it’s cover. They are about to release their EP, ‘Vat:Auhla’ on Monsieur Adi’s Technofavrik label and if this track, ‘97’, is anything to go by it will be a storming release. Both the production and arrangement in the tune is something pretty special and show a real progression from earlier tracks of theirs (remember ‘Emotional Day’ & ‘Auhlau’?), the highs and lows of the song are perfectly laid out and the finale synth solo is genius!

‘Vat:Auhla’ drops 24th May with four original tracks and two remixes by Owl Vision and Datassette.

Edwin Van Cleef reMixes Funkstar De Luxe

FunkstarDeLuxe

It seems like it’s been a while since we heard from Valerie House-meister Edwin Van Cleef, but he has cropped up reMixing Funkstar De Luxe’s latest single ‘Do You Feel?’.

Van Cleef’s reMix is smooth, radio friendly, Electro Disco jam, keeping the vocals of the original intact and injecting some of that retro inspired synth groove we would expect from the man.

Backseat Dreamer

BackseatDreamer

Backseat Dreamer is the solo project of South Carolina musician Sean Neuse who makes a kinda’ Shoegaze influenced style of Dreamwave.

Dropping his début album this July, Sean creates a swirling soundscape of intertwining analog synths, layered with just enough retro sounds to keep it from chaos and dreamlike vocals that become another instrument in the mix. The whole thing is kept in check with solid dance beats that make it as much dancefloor fodder as listening gold.

Backseat Dreamer’s début album ‘The Colors of Dreams, They’re In You’ is released 13th July on Stickfigure Recordings.

LUFRKKK

LUFRKKK

What the fuck is this now? I haven’t got much to say about Brazilian LUFRKKK, as I don’t know much. I recognize the name for some reMixes but the email I received was pretty cryptic.

As is the track, it’s an awesome melting pot of genres. Give it a listen, once you get used to it, rapping over Dreamwave style Nu-Disco is actually pretty cool. Hearing the big 80’s synths with an MC and some AutoTuned vocals takes some getting used to, but you end up thinking “if this is the direction Hip-Hop is going in, I can dig” especially when there are vocoders to ease you in. And then…once you are comfortable, once you have got used to the Hip-Hop/Dreamwave/Pop R&B/Nu-Disco/Electro-House mash-up…it gets all Drum & Bass on your ass!

Take that genres!

Indiscreet wants to vanish from here…

Indiscreet

French Electro artist Indiscreet has delivered something pretty special in his new EP, ‘The I’, not only does it contain four tracks of Ed Banger-esq noisy ElectroPop but also a narrative with accompanying online comic. Yes, I’m talking about a concept work here, which in the realms of Electronic Music tends to be a hell of a lot more interesting than Prog Rock concept albums of old.

Telling the time fractured story in which the protagonist lives through a self-fulfilling prophesy of the creation of a fascist future, governed by a giant eye (The ‘I’ of the title), the story is told in reverse through the tracks on the EP and in graphic form on Indiscreet’s MySpace.

So, the music? Aggressive ElectroPop with heavy distorted synths, hard Electro-House beats and angst fuelled vocals, create a more lyrical take on the Ed Banger sound. Unmistakable French, Indiscreet seem to be writing Hard Rock songs with electronic equipment and the merging of the Rock formula with banging noisy house akin to the likes of Justice and MSTRKRFT works in such a powerful way, like a controlled chaos.

I can only imagine that an Indiscreet show is a pretty awesome live.

Owl City gets the magic touch of Grum

OwlCity

I remember a few weeks ago Grum saying on Twitter that he was reMixing Owl City, I thought he was joking…apparently not!

Unlike I lot of people, I actually don’t hate Owl City, they remind me of a Poppier The Postal Service, and I did like The Postal Service (and I like Pop!). So I’m OK with OC going in but damn does Grum work some serious magic here. In a way he’s taken Owl City, and made it Monarchy, and that’s an ace thing to do! The mixture of Adam Young’s introspective, borderline Emo, SynthPop and Grum’s Disco infused Dreamwave creates this genius dancefloor ElectroPop gold!

Calling In Sick reMix Cullen

Cullen

It’s been a while since we heard a new reMix from Sydney’s Calling in Sick, which is a shame as I used to be all over their mixes. Seriously couldn’t get enough of that shit!

So it’s awesome to see them back with this reMix of Australia’s answer to The Postal Service, Cullen’s début single, ‘Easily Impressed’ and it’s just the Calling In Sick sound that I had been missing.

You’ve got the buzzsaw synths hammering crazy solos and arpeggios and the big 80’s chords. Calling In Sick are like the 80’s hair Metal of electronic music, and that is no bad thing!

Ellie Goulding; Guns And Horses reMix

ellie goulding

I’m absolutely lovin’ this reMix of Ellie Goulding’s album opener and forthcoming single ‘Guns And Horses’ by German House producer Tonka.

It’s a slice of pure sweeping Disco/House excellence that completely compliments the song, never overpowering it. Keeping the song itself intact, Tonka’s reMix gives it that pumping summery euphoric Disco vibe in the same way Russ Chime’s did for ‘Starry Eyed’.

Soul II Soul reMixed by Monsieur Adi

SoulIISoul

I’m seriously lovin’ this! I’ve always felt that Soul II Soul’s 1989 classic ‘"Back to Life (However Do You Want Me)’ have never, ever, been given a good, proper contemporary reMix. Until now!

Italian electro-House dude Monsieur Adi has put together this awesome reMix described by the man himself as “a super clash of baroque and electro” which accounts for the harpsichord/Nu-Disco mash up that really works the original in a way that makes every previous attempt to reMix it seem, well, just lazy.
