Rex The Dog takes Mason way back

I love Rex The Dog’s recent burbling Acid/ElectroPop reMixes, this reMix of Mason’s ‘Little Angel’ is the best so far.

It’s a deep 80’s jam at heart, the 808 and Acid bassline are pure Summer Of Love, but Rex has expertly layered over the top a shimmering and think ElectroPop tune. The result is a Moroder-esque DiscoPop tune of epic proportions complete with wailing guitar. Vocals on the track are provided by Aqualung which are kept largely intact in this mix, adding to the power and drive of ‘Little Angel’/

Moustache Machine reMixes Cassius

Parisian Italo Disco dude Moustache Machine had reMixed Cassius ‘Toop Toop’.

Throwing the original’s syncopated Indie out the window MM give us a bassline heavy ElectroPop track that soars high above the dancefloor. The track has a nice combination of all that’s good in retro synth music. An Italo bassline, some nice Synth Funk solos and keeps the raucous vocals intact to ramp up the energy.

Fare Soldi reMix Toro Y Moi

Italian production team Fare Soldi have turned their attention on Toro Y Moi, turning the Chillwave into Funkwave.

Our favourite crazy Disco duo give ‘New Beat’ a thorough Italo influenced Disco going over. The track is cowbell crazy and features June’s official funkiest bassline. Be prepared to be put in a good mood!

Mjolnir

Mjolnir, you probably know from their The Chemical Brothers reMix that was doing the rounds a couple of weeks ago. This Indonesian trio make some sweet Disco and Italo influenced ElectroPop that you need to check out.

Picking up the ItaloPop torch from Heartbreak (what’s happened to Heartbreak?) ‘Just A Boy’ is an epic six minutes of mid-80’s sounding SynthPop that could easily be dropped in the middle of an 80’s set and have the crown stroking their chins a commenting that they remember this track, it’s on the tips of their tongues! ‘Midway’ is slightly more contemporary in it’s production but sneaks Duran Duran-esque guitar riff in there amongst the sparkling ElectroPop and vodocer madness, and it’s catchy as hell too.

Mjolnir – Just A Boy

Mjolnir (Feat. Dini) – Midway

They also entered this reMix in Tuff ‘Em up’s Barretso remix competition, it’s some seriously solid Disco.

Mjolnir are definatly a trio to keep you eyes on, we expect great things.

Dimitri From Paris & DJ Rocca Present Erodiscotique

Clive ‘Crash’ Lewis from electronic rumors presents a look at Dimitri From Paris & DJ Rocca Present Erodiscotique’s new single. I hate long winded artist names, is there any particular reason they couldn’t just call this project ‘Erodiscotique’ other than peeps ego’s needed stroking? Although Dimitri’s a cool guy and I love Rocca’s work in Chrimea X did they really need to have their names and a project name?

The irritating name aside, ‘I Need A Reason For Living’ is actually an awesome track, it’s got a real solid late 80’s dance sounds. I make no pretence that I don’t adore orchestral hits, ‘cos I do, they’re so rad and this track is full of them in a Bomb The Bass’ ‘Don’t Make Me Wait’ style but with male vocals supplied by Fred Ventura (which I suppose makes it ‘Dimitri From Paris & DJ Rocca Present Erodiscotique (Feat. Fred Ventura)’ which is just ridiculous). The old school use of sampling and the bouncy FM bassline make me so nostalgic for the late 80’s. Really dig the sound these guys are cooking up on their new EP ‘I Love New York’ from which ‘I Need A Reason For Living’ comes. It’s a but Italo, a bit Hip-House, a bit DancePop, totally cool.

Silenx

Silenx is Joel Azevedo, a Portuguese producer and relative newcomer to this thing we call Electro.

His music is heavily 80’s Synthsizer Funk influenced Dreamwave. One minute you are treated to a slap bass frenzy and squelchy Moog lead lines, the next it’s dark, deep synth soundtrack stuff. Complex and analog sounding, Silenx’s productions are the perfect 80’s soundtrack tunes, but teen movie fodder this ain’t! With a dark undercurrent the tracks have a driving, exciting edge to them. ‘Midnight Dreamer’ especially shows Joel to have an awesome knack for layering sounds in just the right places.

Rimer London’s ‘Love Dagger’

Rimer London (A.K.A Le Le’s Rimeroni Vumani) is back with more of his Synthesized Italo Disco, this time featuring the voice of Cata.Pirata.

‘Love Dagger’, Rimeroni’s forthcoming single, is probably the pinnacle so far of his deep analog take on Disco. With unmistakable Italo influences and a little bit if that funk underneath. UI gotta’ say, I really like the way Cata’s vocals are working with the space Disco sounds.

The video was directed by Sandder:

Slightly depressing video there. Still, the music has got me eager for Rimer’s long awaited full length record!

Billie Ray Martin’s Sweet Suburban Disco

You gotta’ love Billie Ray Martin really, haven’t you? She’s practically a legend in the realm of dance music and she has this massive powerful soul voice, yet she’s always tried to do something interesting. Where she could just be content to warble over the latest fashionable House track she always does something with an edge that wears it’s slightly more eclectic influences on it’s sleeve. That she’s did an EP of Cabaret Voltaire covers last year is a prime example.

So, with “reinventing Italo Disco” as a goal Ms. Martin is back with a new single, ‘Sweet Suburban Disco’, and reinvent Italo she has. This is Italo that was conceived in the rain soaked backstreets of Soho. Deep grooves are overlaid with layer of sparse, cold, synths which are expertly counterpointed by Billie’s huge warm vocals and the best lyrical content we’ve heard in dance music for a while (I’m a huge fan of narratives in music!). Mashing up Italo, ElectroPop and a little Balearic, BRM manages to create a slick package that is as forward-thinking sounding as it is retro.

The reMix duties are provided by Severino, Luke Solomon, Ray Grant and SynthPop godfather Vince Clarke, who turns in a surprisingly deep and edge dancefloor mix.
