Goin’ Old School: Afrika Bambaataa & The Soul Sonic Force – Looking For The Perfect Beat

Looking for the Perfect Beat? Afrika Bambaataa & The Soul Sonic Force were in 1983, they pretty much found it then gave it to Hip Hop who, let’s be honest, hasn’t always treated it well.

VHS Or Beta’s new track

VHS Or Beta have announced the details of their forthcoming fourth album, to be titled ‘Diamonds & Death’ and released later this year.

The first track from the record is ‘I Found A Reason’ a surprisingly synth based track loaded with Disco groove and House piano wrapped up in a pretty smooth ElectroPop package. Evidently influenced by founders Craig Pfunder and Mark Palgy relocation to Brooklyn this album looks like it will see the band take on more of a New York Disco vibe.

VHS Or Beta – I Found A Reason

‘Diamonds & Death’ is due for release 27th September.

Azari & III’s ‘Manic’

I’m really digging the new single from Canadian eclectic House/ElectroPop duo Azari & III.

‘Manic’ is pure deep sexbeat goodness. A rolling beat and electronic bassline coupled with the 80’s R&B vocals on hypnotic, brain infesting, “oooh oooh”s create, with the sweeping synths, is real mix up of Detroit, Disco and 90’s UK House. Whatever it is, there isn’t anyone quite like Azari & III around at the moment, and we’re glad they are.

Azari & III – Manic

‘Manic’ is out on 24th July with reMixes from DJ Sneak, Tiger & Woods, Finger Prince and Christian Aids.

Ursa Minor (Little Bear)

Ursa Minor (Little Bear) are a London based outfit consisting of Little Bear, Yoshee, Evee and KTP who set about creating a kind of live, House influenced, synthesizer soundscape.

It’s really hard to pigeonhole Ursa Minor (Little Bear), I can definitely hear a root in the heyday of 90’s House and, more specifically, DancePop but they have taken that basis and moved it to a raw, live place. Like a garage Dance act there is an excitement, and urgency, about the real drumming and analog synth riffs and something almost freeform and jazzy in the musicianship. All this makes for a cosmic and compelling backing for the Post-Punky vocals. This is space age stuff but at the same time really down to Earth and, in a world of machine beats and quantized riffs, really human.

Penguin Prison had dropped a whole package of awesome reMixes of his ‘Multi-Millionaire’ single for free on his website.

This bundle of Mixes not appearing on the forthcoming single includes work from Graphics, Prince Language, Random Elements, Robert Owens and this track from Lancelot who brings a nervous synth line and some deep Electro grooves to the track, it’s my personal favourite of the set.

Cenob1te

Kick out those mid-week blues with Dubstep duo Cenob1te.

Cenob1te are part of the Chocago based Electro, Drum & Bass & DubstepDead Fame collective which includes electronic rumors faves Midnight Conspiracy. Their track, ‘Hell’, is pure, unashamed robotic evil. Textbook Electro heavy Dubstep that infects both body and brain.

Jordan F’s ‘Definitely Miami’

Syndey based producer Jordan F send on over his latest creation, a track called ‘Definitely Miami’.

Jordan hopes it “makes you think of Crockett and Tubbs in a car chase chasing criminals through the streets of Miami”, give it ‘til the midway point and it defiantly does. He’s got some nice 80’s TV theme tropes in there from the drums fills to the power chords, all wrapped up with a deep retro bassline to give it that bit of groove.
