[MP3] The Boy & Sister Alma’s début single

The Boy & Sister Alma

The Boy & Sister Alma are a brand new ElectroPop outfit out of Montana making some a noise with elements of 80s Pop, avant-Pop and Indie-Electro. they’ve just released their début single, the atmospheric and euphoric Lizard Eyes. Début singles are always a tricky proposition. I’s like your manifesto, introducing yourself and telling the world what you are about, The Boy & Sister Alma have done pretty well picking their premiere soundtrack.

Lizard Eyes is a laid back, haunting at times, slice of ElectroPop that manages to walk the line between 80s Retro Pop and IndiePop. Lilting vocals over an almost Italo SynthWave backing makes for an unusual combination, but works really well. There’s even a rockin; guitar solo in there it keep even the staunchest of 80s epic purist happy. All-in-all it’s a little rough around the edges, but The Boy & Sister Alma are definitely an act that shows promise, and we’re interested to see where they go from here.

Mirror Kisses

American ElectroPop duo Mirror Kisses are gearing up for the release of their new album, Heartbeats, in the coming couple of months. just to tide you over until them, the guys have released a new, free, single, delivering a taste of what’s to come. Heartbeat will follow on from Mirror Kisses last album, Bad Dreams, which you may remember us quite liking.

Runaways is smooth and slicker than what’s come before it, with a load of crossover appeal. Injecting Mirror Kisses SynthWave-Pop sound with a little Tropical swing and an Indie coo,l Runaways is less overtly retro and more contemporary nostalgia than the last record. Don’t get us wrong, the track is still washed in an 80s sheen, particularly helped along by George Clanton’s moody croon, but Runaways transcends it’s vintage roots and brings their sound up-to-date. Waves of lush, haunting, synths share sound-space with a cheeky little guitar riff and big Disco keys, making for the prefect, intoxicating, backing for Clanton’s heartfelt performance. We’re definitely looking forward to hearing what the album holds.

[Video] Chvrches’ ‘Recover’

The UK’s ElectroPop saviours Chvrches’ new single, Recover, also sees their first proper music video, and what a music video it is.

A Sci-Fi epic, fitting for a SynthPop song, particularly one so majestic, the clip has hints of 2001, BladeRunner, and a lot of mysterious cubes. Amazing stuff.

[Video] Glass Candy’s ‘The Possessed’

We posted Glass Candy’s new tune, The Possessed, a few days ago, being another tease of what to expect from Italians Do It Better’s forthcoming After Dark 2 compilation. Now here’s the video.

Directed, once again, by Alberto Rossini, features more footage in grainy video style. His old 8mm style works so well with Glass Candy’s music.

After Dark 2 will be out soon, with tracks from Glass Candy, Mirage, Desire, Farah, Twisted Wires, Appaloosa, Symmetry, and Chromatics.

[Video] Goin’ Old School: Thompson Twins & Bronski Beat

Goin’ Old School isn’t a trip down music memory lane, it’s a mugging in the dark alleyway of nostalgia:

A couple of ElectroPop legends this week, starting with Thompson Twins’ smoothness from 1983, Hold Me Now.

And classic Bronski Beat’s 1984 hit Why?.

[Audio] Chvrches reMix St. Lucia

St. Lucia

Now, this is a bit of a treat. Two of the finest ElectroPop acts around  in a reMix sound-off.  Brooklyn SynthPop master Jean-Philip Grobler A.K.A. St. Lucia’s Before the Dive gets a beautiful, swirling abstract electro makeover by Glaswegian ElectroPop buzz factory Chvrches. That’s a meeting of minds we weren’t expecting, but we wonder where it’s been all out lives.

The result is a lush, experimental Pop tune (that’s experimental in a musical way, not experimental bashing some sheet metal and fiddling with the LFO way). Adding some of their own heavily effected vocals, Chvrches lay down a hypnotic piano hook, pounding industrial drums and layers upon layers of rich synths. This is serious genius at work!

[MP3] Glass Candy’s ‘The Possessed’

glasscandy

Here we have another little taste of what come come with Italians Do It Better’s forthcoming, and long awaited, After Dark 2 compilation. This look behind the curtain comes in the form of Glass Candy’s absolutely epic, seven minute, Extended Runway Edit of The Possessed. No doubt an extended runway edit because it soundtracked some high-concept fashion show in recent months, as is Glass Candy tracks wont.

A beautiful, minimal seven minutes of synthetics. The Possessed pairs a stripped down Italo bassline with a slower tempo to a creeping  background dread. This plays nicely against the more optimistic, warbling lead lines and sweeping synths. The contradiction is matched in Ida No’s vocals, sounding quite upbeat as she lays down some melancholy lyrics. The Possessed is deserved of it’s seven minute length, it;s a track you just have to go with and enjoy the experience.

[Video] James Yuill’s ‘Turn Yourself Around’

Here’s the video for London SynthPopper James Yuill’s new single, Turn Yourself Around. An uplifting slice of ElectroPop goodness with a rough Electro riff and passionate vocals.

The clip, directed by Alex Emslie is inspired by the Greek myth of Sisyphus, condemned to futilely roll a massive boulder uphill, only to watch it roll back down, and to repeat this action forever.

Turn Yourself Around is taken from Yuill’s forthcoming third album, These Spirits, which is released 18th March 18th on his own label The Happy Biscuit Club.

And a just post-Buffalo Stance Neneh Cherry with the The Dynamik Duo produced Kisses On The Wind from 1989.
