Goin’ Old School: Depeche Mode – Strangelove

Strangelove from 1987’s ‘Music For The Masses’ by Depeche Mode, arguably (or at least, I will argue it with you) their finest album.

FM Belfast’s new album

After signing to Morr Music and re-releasing their ‘Underwear’  single earlier this year the Icelandic ElectroPop nut-house that is FM Belfast have just released their new album, ‘Don’t Want To Sleep’. It’s a record full of exactly the kind of SynthPop insanity you’d expect from this lot.

Get your eyes and ears ‘round the video for the first single ‘I Don’t Want To Sleep Either’, directed by Árni Rúnar Hlöðversson, it’s time to be scared and intrigued.

And check out ‘New Year’, taken from the album for some Korg bothering, quirky, Indie-ElectroPop.

Chad Valley’s new video (+ TEED reMix)

Chad Valley’s new track ‘Now That I’m Real (How Does It Feel?)’ has dropped in video form.

The video was directed by Lucy Bridger and is quite a cure clip for the track from Chad’s forthcoming ‘Equatorial Ultravox’ EP

And while you’re here check out his reMix of TEED’s latest single ‘Trouble’ for a surprisingly 80’s groove coming from CV.

Goin’ Old School: Herbie Hancock – Rockit

Synth Jazzasist (yes, I just invented the word Jazzasist, deal with it) and funk futurist Herbie Hancock decided to blow people’s tiny minds in 1983 by releasing ‘Rockit’, a record with synthesizers, scratching and vocoding in it. Everyone was bewildered, it became a massive hit in the UK. Which meant that British video makers (and Pop cryers) Godley & Creme had to make a video that was even more bewildering.

PNAU’s ‘Solid Ground’ video

PNAU’s video for ‘Solid Ground’ had just premiered.

We’ve already had a few of the reMixes knocking around and the single itself dropped last week. The inclusion of a blue-dotted-boobs video seals the deal as an Indie-Electro anthem for the summer.

‘Solid Ground’ is out now.

Goin’ Old School: Skinny Puppy – Warlock

What can be said about Skinny Puppy that hasn’t already. Synthesizer pioneers that changed the face of much of electronic music. 1989’s ‘Warlock ‘is both harsh and beautiful and sadly the only good track on the (Al Jourgensen ruined) ‘Rabies ‘ album.

Goin’ Old School: Krush – House Arrest

One of my favourite tracks of all time, from 1987 Krush’s ‘House Arrest’. The bassline, the keys, Ruth Joy’s floaty vocals work together so well. One of a handful of tracks that really broke the UK house scene. Such memories.

Florrie’s ‘Experimenting With Rugs’

Florrie’s ‘Experimenting With Rugs’ will be featured on her second EP. She explains in this blog post how she keeps independent, and why (although I’m sure working for Xenomania doesn’t really hurt her situation), which is pretty unusual for an artist, to explain where their money comes from in such detail. To be honest Florrie seems to have it really together and will probably make more from her music than if she was on a major.

Florrie’s ‘Experiments’ EP is out 14th June,
