Norwegian Cosmic Disco wizard Lindstrøm, this week, unleashed his new single. The man is an epic freak-out master, but also has released some amazingly catchy stuff when teamed up with some vocal talent. On this occasion he’s got together with Skin Town singer Grace Hall to deliver a nine-minute epic (not that nine-minute epics are a rarity for the Scandinavian Cosmic Disco crew) that melds the galactic with the emotional.
Home Tonight is classic Lindstrøm. The man’s first original (and solo) track in two-ish years burbles and sweeps through it’s extended length but never loses focus. Peppered with an 80s feel, Lindstrøm build the boogie with vintage synths and shuffling percussion before dropping the listener ears first into a solid-as-hell space-age Disco groove. Sparkling and uplifting, the synths dance over the tune with a playful decadence while Grace Hall’s retro Electro Soul vocals surge in and out of the mix. In it’s race for the finish, Home Tonight drops the full force of piano hooks and orchestral stabs to bring it home.

LA Dreamwave hero Let Em Riot is back with another new cut from his forthcoming new EP, Lines. He’s already teased with The Manual at the start of the month which already had us excited for Lines’ March release, this new tune just whets our appetite even more. Check out We Were Young.
We Were Young takes us back to everything we love about Let Em Riot; beautiful, emotional songwriting and authentic sounding, non-pastiche, retro electronics. Australian SynthPop outfit Divine Knights have a new single in the offing. The retro flavoured Let’s Get Started is released today, and here’s the music video to support it.
Glossy and glamorous, the video is a slick performance clip that takes it’s inspiration from Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar.

Bristol’s finest SynthWave export Miles Prower is back in business with two new tracks. Both recently revealed tune are taken from the forthcoming new Prower EP, Azurea. Azurea is due to drop this spring, but you can check out these two track, These Waves Between Us and the Dana Jean Phoenix featuring Local And Load right now. Check ‘em out.
These Waves Between Us is a departure from Prowers previous 80s-influenced sounds into something that sound pretty authentic. A lot of SynthWave has the 80s heavily in it’s DNA, but by no means actually sounds like something from that decade, These Waves Between Us starts to creep slowly in that direction. It’s got that 90s Trance arrangement that seems to be central to the SynthWave sound, but makes it more organic with Electro Soul beats and a Boogie bassline. However, the Prower is at it’s best with vocals and Lock And Load puts Dana Jean Phoenix’s voice to work hard for a dramatic and haunting electronic excursion. A theatrical tune that brings together 80s Sci-Fi soundtracks and 90s Pop to keep the listener enchanted.

This week Jerry Bouthier’s awesome label, Continental, released the new double A-side single from fresh French ElectroPop outfit Bleu Toucan. The duo is made up of Léo Becerra (The Victorias) and Emmanuel Bonzé (Made In Taiwan) and have already released one slab of DiscoPop via Profil de Face Records, now this second release kicks things up a notch. The single comes equipped with the relevant quota of reMixes, including this dreamy gem, of the track Imagine, from our favourite Parisians, Reflex.
Reflex serve up something a little different to their normal output with this one. Less Tropical, more deep and groovy House. The French duo show off their dreamy side with a hazy production of warm tones and atmospheric pads over a bed of shuffling House beats and pumping and subby bassline. It’s awesome to see this other side to Reflex as the twosome flex their musical muscles. You should check out the whole single, it’s top stuff.

Tokyo’s Cuushe has joined the ever expanding roster of one of the labels we respect the most, Cascine. Not that our respect counts for much, but if we were to hold up an example of an independent label doing it right it would be Cascine. For her latest EP, Cuushe is combining the mighty forces of Cascine and Japanese label flau to release Night Lines, a four track “noir storybook” out in April on digital and limited edition 10” vinyl. Check out the records first track, Tie.
Cuushe serves up a sumptuous and beautiful swirling synthetic soundscape. It’s an unusual mix of modern, shoegaze, electronics, and oddly nostalgic arrangement. The drums spin and roll layered over with waves of smokey pads and pin-prick lead arpeggios. It’s an otherworldly soundtrack to Cuushe’s 80s-tinged ethereal vocals. intoxicating stuff.

FineArt is a new producer hailing from windy Brighton. Despite being pretty unknown and just dropping his first track that track has been championed by Annie Mac, who gave it a première on her Radio 1 show. Ruffneck has just been released by Sony. All of which leads us to believe there may be more than meets the eye here. Who FineArt is we’re not sure, but we sure do like the tune.
There’s tons to love about Ruffneck, not least that it kicks off startling similar to The Human League’s Love Action before launching into some hammered House piano. The track is a soup of dance music tropes; the deep bassline is pure Bleep House, the 909 Hats and piano nod to Chicago, the lead and samples are Rave central and the breakdowns UK Deep House gold. All this should be a mess, but FineArt makes it all work perfectly together. A proper festival anthem.

Ukrainian artist Volodymyr Dzitsiuk A.K.A. Polygrim has just hopped on-board with the Synth Records posse for the release of his latest offering. The Pivot EP is seven tracks of intricate electronic beatscapes (yup, just invented the word ‘beatscapes’, deal with it), the lead track on the EP being Memories That Hurt. Check it out.
Memories That Hurt perfectly shows off Polygrim’s skills. It neatly delivers on two levels. One is a hazy and dreamlike synthesizer odyssey, layered with rich pads and warbling leads, the other compelling future R&B beats and rolling basslines. The result is very a Röyksopp-esque symphony sound. Memories That Hurt is quite the narrative composition, laying out a story as it’s densely packed arrangement unfurls. Definitely one to check out if your a lover of chilled synthesizer music.

Jake and Rex are back in the game and going home. Their new single sees Rex The Dog returning to their original home, German Techno label Kompakt. Easily one of the finest producers out there, Jake Williams and his four legged friend combines his love of 80s SynthPop with analog Disco grooves and twisted DIY Techno to create a sound unlike any other. This uniqueness will only be enhanced by Jake spending the last couple of years learning how to build synths. Sicko was composed on this home-made equipment, check it out.
Sicko is a spacious tune, but the stripped down elements it works with are used to their fullest to deliver a rich and full sound. Innovative arpeggiated rhythmic modulated voice sampling provides a unique and compelling core for the track; which then accessories with vintage Electro beats and Techno effects. This is the space that Rex works best in, taking eclectic instrumentation and turning into something effortlessly funky. Over it’s six minute length Sicko just keeps delivering the surprises, so dive on in. Fire up the strobes lights and raise the dog with laser eyes, Rex is back to wreck shop.
