[Download] Cassette Club’s ‘Far Away’

cassette-club

It was only a couple of months ago that London’s masters of smooth Cassette Club released the Unreleased Vol. 2 EP. Now they want you all to hear what they’ve been up to recently, so they’ve dropped the first track from their forthcoming new EP. To be released at the start of December alongside the track Collide; this is Far Away.

So smooth that your speakers might just loose all their structural integrity; Far Away is a blissful slick of Tropical Pop. Opening with some resounding island chimes the track sets it’s mood before sliding into a bubbly synth bassed Funk juggernaut. Tom gets his ultimate croon on as the duo deliver some superb laid back sunshine vibes. The new release will be a most welcome return for London’s finest.

[Audio] Chvrches’ ‘Dead Air’

Chvrches

So remember that new Chvrches track that they’ve been performing live under the moniker of various American comedians? ‘Gene Wilder’, ‘Eddie Murphy’, ‘Richard Pryor’ etc…? Well it’s actually called Dead Air, and it’s taken from the soundtrack of the new The Hunger Games movie, Mockingjay Part 1, which also features the likes of Charli XCX, Haim and Bats For Lashes. Takes a listen to it in it’s full, not-live, glory below.

Alongside their other new, also soundtrack based, track, Get Away, Dead Air is a massive sigh of relief. All too often bands use ElectroPop to get a bit of recognition and then proceed to make a Folk or Indie follow up (naming-no-names, you know who you are). SynthPop’s not just for X-mas! Thankfully Chvrches seem to be living and breathing synths as their new tune shows off the icy keys and skippy beats we have come to love them for. Tempering the sharp sounds Lauren turns-in another heartfelt performance that rises to anthemic euphoria.

What’s almost as exciting as a new tune from Starcadian? A new video! Taking a break from the Sunset Blood saga, Starcadian drops the clip for Dance Or Die from his recent Saturdaze EP.

Or did he? That looks suspiciously like Starcadian pulling at the puppet strings there!

[Download] Nude Disco & BroKen DJ’s reMix Laura Branigan’s ‘Self Control’

Laura Branigan

Here’s something a little tasty to start the week with, a slick reworking of one of our favourite tunes of all time. Whether you’re on Team Branigan or Team Raf there’s no denying that Self Control is an absolute classic. For us the debate generally rests on whether we’re in an ElectroPop mood or an Italo mood, but now we’ve got a contender for when we’re in the mood for some straight-up dancefloor vibes courtesy of this reMix from Nude Disco and BroKen DJ’s of the Laura Branigan version of Self Control.

Falling neatly between the realms of reMix and completely reworked Edit, Nude Disco and BroKen DJ’s take on Self Control distils the tune down to it’s most crowd pleasing elements. Playing up the Italo, but neatly slotting it into their crisp and bouncy South London Disco sound, these guys hype that classic bassline for all it’s worth and give it a little syncopated swing. Bristling with uplifting synths and Balearic purcussion, this reMix uses the original’s vocals and arrangements sparingly; but when it does drop some of the songs memorable moments, it does so to maximum effect.

[Audio] Monsieur Adi reMixes Lana Del Rey’s ‘Brooklyn Baby’

Lana Del Rey

Monsieur Adi has finally unleashed his much hinted at reMix of Lana Del Ray’s Brooklyn Baby, taken from her album Ultraviolence. Whist we’re not generally fans of Del Rey reMixes, this one is something a bit special, concentrating all of Adi’s strong points into one bassy ElectroPop juggernaut. The man really is on of the top talents working in Pop music today, and it;s been quite a ride watching reach this point.

Adi combines a few elements into his mix of Brooklyn Baby. There a nice retro undercurrent, delivered by an 80s sounding arpeggiated bassline, and this contrasts neatly with a skippy R&B beat and booming subs. Creating a more interesting backing that Del Rey’s voice is used to, Adi flexes his recently absent orchestral muscles and elevates the song with the cinematic rise and fall of his string section.

[Download] Ben Macklin’s ‘Physical’

ben-macklin_thumb

Cassette Club’s Ben Macklin just isn’t letting up this year! Becoming one of the scene’s mote prolific producers, Ben continues his journey into Tropical Disco with this new tune, Physical. Depending on whether you’re a glass half full, or glass half empty, type of person this will either carry you away from these cold winter months to a warmer vibe, or remind you just how must it isn’t summer anymore. Either way, get involved.

Macklin drives things home with a solid House backing, a pumping, tight groove that makes a rock solid base for layers of hazy, almost Chillwavey, synths and samples to dance around the track. Keeping the vibes in check is a hypnotic Island lead line that shines down on the track, bringing the sunshine. This is top-down crusin’ music, although maybe you should wait a few months to act on that. Unless you;re in Australia, in which case go for it.

[Audio] Chvrches’ ‘Get Away’

chvrches

The last week or so has been a bit of a treat in regards to new material from Glaswegian ElectroPoppers Chvrches. This evening Zane Lowe premièred new tune Get Away on his Radio 1 show. Get Away is taken from a Lowe curated new, alternate, soundtrack to 2011 “oh look everybody, there’s this thing called SynthWave!” movie Drive. The new version of the film will be shown on BBC3 on 30th October with the option (fingers on the Red Button!) to switch between soundtracks; which, for all our Drive-themed cynicism, is actually pretty neat.

Get Away puts to bed any fears that Chvrches (like so many before them) will abandon ElectroPop after their first record. It’s a swirling synth epic that nicely nods in the general direction of it’s Dreamwave predecessors. A particularly pounding beat of subby kicks and snappy snares underpins a fog of rich pads and Chvrches now-trademark razor sharp leads while Lauren’s typically heartfelt performance dominates the song. Very nice indeed.

While you’re here, check out another new Chvrches tune. As yet formally untitled, the band have been announcing it under the guises of various US comedians. So far it’s been reported to have the titles of ‘Gene Wilder’, ‘Eddie Murphy’; and in this instance (lifted from Austin City Limits Music Festival) ‘Richard Pryor’.

[Audio] Rogue Vogue reMixes Slaptop’s ‘Sunrise’

Slaptop

The Chicago producer who lives and breathes Chicago House Rogue Vogue has turned in another of his storming reMixes. This time he’s featured on the new single from San Francisco outfit Slaptop, who’s Sunrise is released later this month as a Beatport exclusive. Rogue Vogue channels a little Old School Trax on this one, putting his heritage at the fore.

Claps and 909 kicks greet you as you hit play before a barrage of vintage synth stabs. The bass is thick and crisp and shakes the speakers as tight keys dance around the track. Rogue Vogue inject the tune with a little Funk courtesy of a deft organ groove to create contrast with the retro-future sound pallet. Grabbing vocal snatches and depositing them liberally, Rogue Vogue keeps the energy high and spins every element into a enigmatic floorfiller for the warehouse crowd.
