Goin’ Old School: John Foxx, New Order & Gary Numan

Goin’ Old School isn’t a trip down music memory lane, it’s a mugging in the dark alleyway of nostalgia:

Later this week we’ll be shutting up shop for a while, as we are off to Bestival. More on that tomorrow but today’s Goin’ Old School highlights three classic SynthPop acts who will be appearing at Bestival this weekend, starting with ex-Ultravox dark Electro pioneer John Foxx and 1980’s He’s a Liquid.

Headlining Bestival on the Saturday are New Order. Here’s the Arthur Baker produced Confusion from 1983.

And finally SynthPop pretender Gary Numan kicks of Bestival on Thursday night. This is his finest moment, 1985’s Call Out The Dogs.

ZX, now Zedex, reMixes Fenech-Soler + free EP

Electro-House duo ZX have been a bit quite for a while now, since we last wrote about the them have changed their name (well, spelling at least) to Zedex (which I think is better) and, if their new reMix of their friends Fenech-Soler new current ‘Demons’ is anything to go by, have been developing a smoother, slicker sound.

The reMix rocks more of a Disco vibe than their previous, more distorted noisy House, offerings, showing a defiantly maturing of their sound. This track almost goes Cosmic in places with big, lush, synth pads washed with reverb siting atop deep, deep bassline. there is certainly something unique about Zedex’s tunes, I can’t put my finger on it, maybe there’s a little Chicago House influence in there or something. Whatever it is, it’s Nu-Disco with a twist, and I can’t wait to hear more.

Fenech-Soler  – Demons (Zedex reMix)

On top of all this, Fenech-Soler are giving away, or the small price of an email address, an EP of stripped down session versions of four of their best tunes. The White Versions EP is available here.

‘Zulu X-Ray’, Zedex’s awesomely titles second EP is out in April, Fenech-Soler’s ‘Demons’ is out now.

New Delorean single

Delorian

Spanish SynthPop outfit Delorean have recently announced their signing with True Panther records along with a new single and début full-length album.

Gaining some recognition with their EP ‘Ayrton Senna’ (leading to offers to support Miike Snow on tour) Delorean have quite an eagerly awaited record on their hands.

‘Stay Close’ will be the first single form the album, ‘Subzia’, and it’s an upbeat, quite Lo-Fi, slice of summery SynthPop with a Hot Chip-esq lead line and loads of reverby backing vocal acrobatics!

The Antlers get the Buffetlibre treatment

TheAntlers

NYC Indie/Folk outfit The Antlers’s track ‘Two’ was a twee little acoustic guitar excursion, not the most obvious choice for a good hard reMixing but those kinds of the unexpected reMix the Buffetlibre DJs have done just that.

What the Buffetlibre duo have done is created a really good SynthPop track out of the tune, it’s got the beats and the synths but loses none of it’s Indie (as Carles would put it) meaningfulness.

‘Two’ is originally from the album ‘Hospice’, available now.

Calling In Sick reMixes Bertie Blackman

BertieBlackman

I first fell in love with Calling In Sick’s music after I heard their storming reMix of Midfield General (Feat. ViLa)’s ‘Disco Sirens’.

The Aussie duo’s latest project is this rework of Bertie Blackman’s ‘Black Cats’ and it’s got that wicked digital slap bass and huge distorted synth riffs that I loved about Calling In Sick’s previous reMixes. This’ll tear up any electro dancefloor!

Bertie Blackman has just won ‘Breakthrough Independent Artist of the Year’ and ‘Best Independent Release’ at the Australian Independent Record Label Association Awards.

We Have Band Vs. Le Matos

WeHaveBand2

We Have Band’s new single, ‘Honey Trap’, has been masterfully reMixed by Canadian synth heads Le Matos.

Rapid fire arpeggios fuel the track on top the steady disco beat. We Have Band and Le Matos is a pretty sweet pairing actually, the track works really well. Check out the driving ElectroPop tune here:

Kiss In Cities reMix Performance, well, themselves

Performance

OK, so they may be reMixing their own band but Kiss In Cities, the amazing Manchester ElectroPop act, we told you about here, who are comprised of two thirds of Indie-Dance outfit Performance (Née (We Are) Performance ;)), have reworked said parent band’s most popular track to date. ‘Reptile’.

The original song is cool but this reMix is just pretty mind blowing, almost perfect electronic pop, this will absolutely slay on any ElectroPop dancefloor!

Van She don’t fear the reaper

VanShe02

Ever since we got our hands on that radio rip of Van She covering Blue Öyster Cult’s ‘(Don’t Fear) The Reaper’, we have been waiting impatiently for it to drop. The Bacardi B-LIVE folks have been telling us they were releasing it soon soon, but it never seemed to come soon enough!

Well, it’s finally here and, to be honest, it was worth the wait. Those huge Van She bass and lead synths are back! This is easily the best version of this song I’ve heard, Van She’s Indie-Space-Disco is prefect for it!
