a&r

Brooklyn based ElectroPop newcomers a&r have sent on over their cover of Billy Ocean’s ‘Caribbean Queen’, and it’s quite kickin’ indeed.

With a sound akin to fellow NYC imports The Vanish (where did they go?) with slightly more Disco about them the duo actually inflate the Disco Pop bombast of the original. Start listening to it and you’ll be thinking “yeah, this is a really cool ElectroPop cover, sweet” but then nothing prepares you for the massive Disco strings in the chorus, they’ve takes everything good about the original, the hook, the strings, the smooth and amplified it, then kicked its ass onto the dancefloor.

I know a few West Coast dudes who are going to love this!

Listing to some of their other work it’s pretty clear that a&r are defiantly one to keep an eye on.

a&r are gearing up to release their second EP ‘Aquarium’ early this year. You can download their first EP from their official website:

College & Stephen Falken

I wanted to quickly share this College track that went up on the Valerie site recently.

It’s Stephen Falken’s reMix of College’s first single ‘Answers’, which has pretty much been the soundtrack to my chilled weekend. It’s an organically evolving synthesizer Dreamwave treat. Not a party tune by any means, but chuck this on your headphones, sitback, and enjoy!

DannielRadall

In a groove between reverb drenched Chillwave and 80’s UK Pop is a place DannielRadall seems to call home.

She’s just released a new mini-album ‘Prado’, which contains eight tracks that draw on different elements for different parts. The vocals are reminiscent of early 90’s Shoegaze indie while the music is a combination of 80’s Electronic Pop and the occasional Indie guitar riff., all drenched in the obligatory Chillwave reverb.

It’s good stuff too, that this track, ‘Fleeting Romance’, it’s like Nik Kershaw joined Slowdive!

Both tracks are spaced out DiscoPop, ‘Channel’ having more of a Filter-House vibe and this track, ‘All This’ being a Cosmic Disco/ElectroPop odyssey.

Daft Punk reMixed by Cosmonaut Grechko

Oh sweet synthesizer goodness! Daft Punk’s ‘Too Long’ reMixed by awesome Nu-Disco producer Cosmonaut Grechko.

What more needs to be said? Mr. Grechko appears to be one of the few producer who can tackle Daft Punk and not turn it into a complete nightmare. So, with that massive task at hand he does a pretty sweet job adding some ElectoPop flavour to the originals deep Disco vibe.

Daft Punk – Too Long (Cosmonaut Grechko Version)

Today is the 10th anniversary of the release of Daft Punk’s radial and influential ‘Discovery’ album, It really doesn’t seem like that long ago. What a masterpiece!

Fenech-Soler Announcement

This just in from camp Fenech-Soler, I won’t bother paraphrasing, I’ll just copy and past what the guys wrote:

“We are really sorry to have to let you all know that Ben has very recently been diagnosed with early stage cancer. We are absolutely gutted for him, but know that he is in capable hands and he is in really good spirits considering the news. He has a short course of chemo treatment to get through and will be back fighting fit in a couple of months- the recovery rate for testicular cancer is extremely high.
This does mean that, with great regret, we will need to postpone our upcoming UK tour until after our busy festival period. This is also why we’ve had to reschedule our European tour.
We were massively looking forward to coming out and playing to you all later this month and we’re very happy that our Manchester and London dates have sold out in advance. For all those that were coming, your tickets will still be valid for the rescheduled shows. Details of those to be announced shortly. Please bear with us whilst those arrangements are made.
In the meantime, we are going to be very busy promoting our next single ‘Stop And Stare’. The doctors have reassured us that Ben will be fighting fit and ready to play a full set of summer festivals with the list already including Lovebox, Bestival, Camp Bestival, Parklife, Ibiza Rocks, Pukkelpop and Oxegen. Many more being announced over the next few weeks.
Again, we’re really sorry to have to postpone the UK and European shows but we’re sure you all join us in wishing Ben a speedy recovery.
Ross, Andrew and Daniel”

That’s some harsh news right there, but we all wish Ben good health and a fast recovery.

He’d better beat that damed cancer in time for Bestival or there’ll be trouble!

Get well soon Ben.

Brand new Justice track!!! (not a fake!)

Really? You think?

No, of course we haven’t got any tracks from the forthcoming album and anyone who says the have, out side of the Ed Banger/Elektra camp, is probably lying. Fool.

However…while we’ve got you here we’d like to appeal to your humanity for a second and ask you to spare a thought, and maybe some bucks, for our bros over in Japan. Those crazy dudes have enough to deal with cleaning up after all the Godzilla rampages…and now this?!?! The footage of the tsunami was some scary shit, and the rising death toll is even scarier. The Japanese have been dealing with the situation amazingly but I’m sure every little bit you can do to help is appreciated.

The best thing you can do to help right now is to show your support by donating to the Red Cross’ appeal. Which, handily, you can do in many countries. To make it even easier for you here a are a few links:

UK: http://www.redcross.org.uk/Donate-Now/Make-a-single-donation/Japan-Tsunami-Appeal
US: http://www.redcross.org/

DE: http://www.drk.de/
CA: http://www.redcross.ca/article.asp?id=38380&tid=001
AU: http://www.redcross.org.au/japan2011.htm

Apologies to my French brethren, I didn’t have a clue about the Croix-Rouge website, if anyone wants to email us the link I’ll add it.

Go on, in exchange for all my hard work over the past three years bringing you the best new Electro, a couple of bucks and we’ll call it quits!

Edit: I added a red Cross picture! See what I did there?

Ellie Goulding covers The Knife’s ‘Heartbeats’ in the Live Lounge

This afternoon Ellie Goulding was featured in the Live Lounge on Jo Wiley’s BBC Radio 1 show, on top of performing her new single ‘Lights’ she also covered The Knife’s ‘Heartbeats’.

It was a pretty sweet acoustic cover too, the song lends itself well to Ellie’s voice. I’m probably going to get a bit hypocritical here though ‘cos I absolutely hate Jose Gonzalez’s dull-as-shit version of a song I love, but when Ellie does it acoustically I quite like it. Maybe I just hate Mr. Gonzalez’s dreary voice, or maybe I just love Ellie’s. Either way, I enjoyed this cover.

You can listen to the whole show here, and Ellie releases ‘Lights’ as a single 11th March.

Viceroy

The weekend starts here!

Courtesy of the awesome Shiny Disco Club we have two tracks to promote ‘In The Sky’, the début EP from Viceroy, to get you in the mood for the weekends partying. Viceroy is Californian Austen Afridi who started out making Dubstep, to some acclaim, before diving head first into the waters of French House and Nu-Disco. Neither of these tracks are on the EP (‘Free Flow’ is a blog exclusive!) but give you a perfect taster of Viceroy’s funked up sound and will probably have you gagging for the EP. ‘Free Flow’ is pure party jam, cut up horns and vocals flying all over the place to a solid, solid, groove. ‘Oh Yeah’ shows off some more of the young producers skills for chopping and editing over a some tropical flavoured beats.

You! & Walter Sobcek

It was only a couple of days ago that we posted the first round of reMixes of Parisian duo You!’s ‘Heart’, well looks like they are saving the best ‘til last. There’s an eagerly awaited Edwin Van Cleef mix on the way and this track by awesome French, yet International, duo Walter Sobcek!

This mix is SO good, it’s interesting what that usually chilled Walter Sobcek do with the faster pace of the You! track. The end result is a beat that is as smooth as the smoothest Dreamwave but also full of driving energy. Like a massive 80’s rock track covered by a Dreamwave act, complete with solo in the finale, the track is a Jekyll & Hyde of laid back Miami nights and peak time in a sweaty rave.

Well done Misters Sobcek!

You! – Heart (Walter Sobcek Rmx)

Also, it’s amazing the amount of people who spell Walter Sobcek wrong, and think it’s one dude! LOL

We’ll have the Edwin Van Cleef reMix coming up for you soon, You!’s self titled début album is out now.
