It’s by Mammoth Logic, and ElectroPop creating duo from Adelaide who mix up SynthPop, French Electro and Post-Punk to form their analog retro sound. Multi instrumentalists Dave Crowe and Reid Jones make something that could be described as Garage Disco-Pop, the music has a distinctly live feel to it, like it’s being played rather than programmed, and the combination of analog synths, impressive vocals, a touch of vocoding and some infectious 80’s sounding chords is hard to beat.
Don’t really know who Yannick Aellen is, perhaps I should, he seems to be some kind of man-about-town (or his press release claims, anyway), but his doesn’t mean he can make good music. Luckily, he can.
Rocking some serious old school SynthPop stylings that would feel right at home in New York’s Minimal Synth movement ‘The Devil (Is A Woman I Never Slept With)’ is all heavy monosynth bass and stripped down drums with a raw, early Mute Records, feel to it. But it’s Yannick’s vocals that set him apart, he’s a self proclaimed crooner, which is defiantly a vocal niche that Electro is missing out on.
The single, taken from ‘the History Of Modern’ OMD’s first studio album on 14 years, will also feature a reMix from Finnish SynthPop heroes and sometime OMD support act VillaNah who layer the track with their own brand of retro electronics. Amazingly, VillaNah have managed to make the song sound more retro than OMD themselves, that’s quite an achievement!
Hey, didwemention we’re particularly exited about LexiconDon’s forthcoming début album? No? We’d better mention it then!
Here at electronic rumors we’re particularly excited about LexiconDon’s forthcoming début album!
And to keep that excitement going Binary have dropped the second preview track from ‘Pink + Blue’, released later this month. ‘Student Body’, like ‘December Sunset’ the previous track, is smoother and more mature (musically) than we had previously been used to, which bodes well for the album. This track is just pure catchy summer SynthPop. It’s got everything in the right places; a mid 80’s R&B groove, Indie tinged vocals with a cool narrative, retro ElectroPop synths.
LexiconDon’s ‘Pink + Blue’ is due to drop 24th August on dubFrequency/Binary, and keep it locked to electronic rumors for our forthcoming Binary event!
SynthPop duo Night Gallery are about to release their début album ‘Constant Struggle’. Made up of Golden Birthday’s Adam Griffiths and Aaron David Ross from ace Electronica act GATEKEEPER, who brings some of GATEKEEPERS moodiness to the tracks, this Chicago based outfit
It’s a really 80’s affair. Without nods to current retro fads, Night Gallery create quite an authentic retro Pop sound which dispute the minor chords and brooding sounds manages to be quite uplifting (in the same way that martin Gore’s songs seem to be). Their press release compares them to Clan Of Xymox, which is actually a pretty good description, albeit with a lot less guitars, slightly less gothyness and a lot more contemporary sounding.
‘Constant Struggle; is being released on Rainbow Body Records next month on limited edition vinyl (numbering 500) and even limiteder(?) edition cassette (only 100).
HURTS have just premiered the new video for the single release of ‘Wonderful Life’ and it’s pretty funny.
In a massive self-referencing in-joke the video appears to be a wake, morning the loss of the crazy dancing lady from the original ‘Wonderful Life’ video, complete with a troupe of veiled dancing girls replicating her moves.
Goodbye crazy dancing lady, you will be sorely missed…
SynthPop legend and all-round synth guru Vince Clarke has reMixed Goldfrapp’s third single from their ‘Head First’ album, ‘Believer’.
The Depeche Mode/Yazoo/The Assembly/Erasure pioneer has gone seriously retro on the track which could easily be ‘2nd album era’ Yazoo, with a syncopated bassline that’s so 80’s it’s amazing! It’s a really cool reMix that sounds retro with out sounding ‘old’.
Vince is currently in his Cabin studio with Any Bell working on new Erasure material, if this reMix is an indication of the musical mood he’s we could be in for a treat.
‘Believer’ is released 7th September on Mute with reMixes from Vince Clarke, Subway, Joris Voorn and Davide Rossi.
We’ve featured a couple of Walter Sobcek’s reMixes recently, for NightWaves and Housse De Racket, so when they stopped by the electronic rumors Inbox with a preview of their forthcoming EP we were eager to listen.
Hailing from Paris and Berlin this duo make some slick retro sounding SynthPop which is perfectly exemplified by their vocoder laden cover of Hall & Oats’ ‘She’s Gone’, a smooth as hell chilled summer jam.
To celebrate the the track Walter Sobcek have put together this video which, in their own words, is a ‘tribute to Jennifer Connelly and Rollerskating’ (luckily it’s hot late 80’s/early 90’s Jennifer Connelly, not 00’s anorexic Jennifer Connelly). The video is made up of clips from John Hughes’ 1991 movie ‘Career Opportunities’ and works so well with the song!
Walter Sobcek release a single last year you can still pick up and are looking to release their new EP in September.
The first single from their first studio album in 14 years, ‘The History Of Modern’, the track is sounding very classic OMD. Stripped down and synthesized is the way we like our OMD and ‘If You Want It’ sounds like it won’t disappoint.
♫ OMD (Orchestral Manoeuvres In The Dark) – If You Want It (Preview)
The ‘If You Want It’ single is released 6th September with ‘The History Of Modern’ slated to be released later this year.
A couple of weeks ago we dropped a preview track from LA SynthPoppers LexiconDon’s forthcoming début long player. The track, ‘December Sunset’ has been on rotation here ever since and has us dying with anticipation for the album to be released. An evolution from their rabble rousing Electro everyman-call-to-arms into something a lot smoother and heartfelt, the track has captured out imaginations.
While we haven’t got another new track for you today, what we do have is a reMix of ‘December Sunset’ byCanadian producer U-Tern. And what a reMix it is! That FM synth bassline is so infections that if it doesn’t get you moving your probably in a coma, or dead and the nurses haven’t noticed! And just when you think you’re full, and the huge synth stabs are still ringing round your head…enter slap bass solo!
If you’re fans of Binary records and that sweet LA SynthPop sound then keep it locked to electronic rumors in the coming weeks, we have a pretty special Binary even planned for y’all!
LexiconDon’s album, ‘Pink + Blue’ is due to drop 24th August on dubFrequency/Binary.
