Ronika’s new single

ronika

Hopefully avoiding any disturbances in Nottingham this week, the UK’s most fun and funky DiscoPop chanteuse Ronika has announced her next single, coming in September.

It’ll be some double A-side goodness featuring the tracks ‘Only Only’ and ‘In The City’. You can listen to ‘In The City’ right here. It’s all call to arms, or at least a call to dance, for those of us coping with baking summer days in the urban jungle. Ronika’s slick post-Disco 80’s beats and basslines have never been showed off so perfectly as they are here, add to that a cool Disco lick & an early 90’s House undercurrent and you have a combination that, when Ronika commands you to dance, is unavoidably intoxicating. There’s an excitement to ‘In The City’, a celebration starting anthem that leaves you feeling that the party is about to blow up.

Nottingham’s Madonna, Ronika, has giver her own current single, the amazing vintage DiscoPop ‘Wiyoo’, a gritty club reMix.

Her ‘Own You’ reMix sheds the early 80’s post-New York Disco slickness of the original in favour of buzzsaw analog synths an nod toward electronic groove. The slightly bit crushed FM sounds give the tune the tiniest ChipTune edge. Ronika’s achievement here is blending a fair amount of distorted synths and Industrial-esque noise into an electronic Disco tune without it ever becoming overpowering, the track still sounds smooth and fit for an big room dancefloor. One more Ronika shows us why she’s fast approaching becoming the queen of Disco with an edge.

‘Wiyoo’ is out now, and we’ll have some exciting Ronika news in the coming months that I can’t really talk about now, with kinda’ makes me a dick for mentioning in but I was never good at keeping exciting secrets.

Ronika; ‘Wiyoo’

Nottingham’s finest proponent of retro DiscoPop, Ronika, finally releases her ‘Forget Yourself’/’Wiyoo’ single next week.

We introduced you to the A-side early last month, now just ahead of the single release you can have a listen to the B-side, ‘Wiyoo’ (as in Why you?) cements her position as the Madonna of the midlands, only with more New York Disco authenticity and than Madge could ever muster. This track could quite easily be the theme tune and hit single to a 1984 edgy rom-com called Wiyoo, probably starring Ronika in her first major motion picture role, bringing some of the style and sass that allowed her to dominate the charts in ‘82-‘83 to the screen. If you get what I mean. The music, though, is pure early 80’s DiscoPop of the highest calibre. Many people try to emulate this sound but Ronika seems to be able to do it effortlessly and unlike many of her contemporaries does it without a hint of pastiche or novelty. ‘Wiyoo’ sounds totally authentic.

Ronika

It’s not the weekend just yet, but here’s a little tune that’s sure to get you in the partying mood.

Hailing from Nottingham, Ronika is a retro DiscoPop whirlwind here to blow the cobweb out of your 21st century brain. Musically this is real authentic sounding early 80’s Pop, particularly reminiscant of that period of American Pop that was on the tail end of Disco and the emergance of SynthPop. Think early Madonna or Blondie’s flirtation with Disco (and Hip Hop), the lead line on ‘Forget Yourself’ is pure B-Boy Electro while the squelchy synth bass is loaded with funk. Yet amongst all the nostalgic American musical awesomeness is a Modern British singer with tongue-firmly-in-cheek and an English sense of irony that would make Pet Shop Boys proud.

A one hundred percent DIY operation, Ronika releases her second EP ‘Forget Yourself’/’Wiyoo’ next month backed with reMixes from Mirrorzisland and herself. I can’t help but feel that this is how Pop sounds if people who love Pop are left to make it unsupervised (by people who want to make money). Or, at least, this is how it should sound!

‘Forget Yourself’/’Wiyoo’ drops 13th June on Ronika’s own label, RecordShop, her début EP is out now.
