[Download] Teeel reMixes The New Division’s ‘Senseless’

Not for the first time New Jersey’s hardest working synth-head Teeel is taking on the challenge of reMixing LA Indie-Electro outfit New Division. These guys have swapped reMixes a couple of time and the latest of these exchanges sees Teeel working his magic on The New Divisions’ current single, Senseless, which was released earlier this month.

Teeel’s take on Senseless is a cascading synthetic affair. Layers upon Layers of bristling arpeggios and buzzing bass wash over each other, taking time to settle in before Teeel re-introduced the original’s anthemic vocals. Stripping out the Indie side of the track, this one is pure SynthPop, a sprawling track whose expansive synths match the cavernous vocals perfectly.

[Audio] Ronika’s ‘Step To My Beat’

Here’s a new Ronika song… At this point in our website life we could probably just leave things there, but we won’t, ‘cos then we’d just be like every shitty ‘music blog’ that posts track with neither comment or commentary that we hate. Hell, we’ve always had a sneaking suspension that no-one read this waffle anyway. But we are a website that remains arrogantly narcissistic enough to believe our words are important. Also we are a website that is constantly walking the line between integrity and just becoming a Ronika fan blog. The end result being that you’re going to sit there, shut up, and read what we have to say about this fantastic new tune from Nottingham’s finest. This is Step To My Beat.

If you ever needed a Friday post work pick-me-up to get you energised for the weekend then this is it. We start off incredibly tight with a classic Electronic Soul groove; punchy drums, robust synth bass and wicked little rooftop licks drifting across the track’s skyline. Ronika eases us into the groove before unleashing the chorus’ secret weapon; big Miami percussion and Sound Machine-y stabs explode from the speakers in a flurry of exuberant nostalgic dancefloor goodness while Ron invites us to dance. Extended mix anyone?

[Video] Chic’s ‘I’ll Be There’

Here it is. Long awaited. It’s Nile Rodger’s Chic’s first new song in 23 years; I’ll Be There. A glorious blend of classic Chic and modern touches, celebrating the history of Disco. If fair to say no-one has replaced Nile in the last two decades.

So, here’s the video. It features Karlie Kloss, who is apparently a supermodel or something, and also seems like a bit of an idiot. To be honest we’re a bit disappointed with the clip. We expected more from Nile than ‘rake thin model writhes in her pants’. Oh well, let’s hope there’s a next time to make up for it.

[Audio] This Soft Machine’s ‘On & On’

Sometime Das Moth, sometime just Tim Sullivan, now This Soft Machine released his début single under this moniker next moth. The London based musician has got on board with Eskimo Recordings to present his première double A-side that features the two tracks, On & On and This Place Was Meant For Me. Ahead of the records release you can check out On & On when it features on the latest instalment of Eskimo’s colour themed compilations. The pretty amazing The Orange Collection, due out in May.

Enlisting the talents of a whole bunch of friends, including Lorraine Nicholson on vocals and Cut Copy’s Dan Whitford on synths, This Soft Machine recorded On & On live; which is no mean feat as the track is a pretty complex Cosmic Disco jam. Five minutes in length, On & On evolves as it progresses introducing a warbling synth groove, smooth walking bass and Nicholson husky vocals amid a sea of Sci-Fi electronic brap. Restrained Disco experimentalism that must have been fun as hell to record.

[Video] Monarchy’s ‘Black Widow’

In a week that saw the huge reMix of UK SynthPoppers Monarchy’s Dancing In The Corner from The Penelopes, we are also treated to a brand new video. The clip is for Black Widow, taken from the duo’s just released Abnocto album.

The video features Monarchy’s best chum, Dita Von Teese, and has Ross McElwain & Manos Ioannou directing some monochrome bondage and synth shenanigans.

[Audio] Parallels cover New Order’s ‘Age Of Consent’

Amazing Torontonian SynthPop outfit Parallels are back after quite a hiatus. Things have been quite on the Parallels front since their sophomore album XII in 2012 and we feared we’d seen the last of them. But fear not, they’ve just announced that they are hard at work on their third studio record and in the meantime you should check out their new cover of New Order’s Age Of Consent.

It’s a pretty flat out cover with a raw garage feel. It’s nice to hear Holly back in action with some sweet synths. If we’re honest we don’t think the guitar does a good job of standing in for Hooky’s classic bass sound and it’s a bit overpowering in the mix. We’re hoping for a lot less of that on the new original material, but it does give this cover a raw, live feel. That aside it’s an energetic and driving cover of a song we all love and anything that lays the path for Parallels return is awesome by us.

[Audio] The Penelopes reMix Monarchy’s ‘Dancing In The Corner’

We’ve been itching all week to drop this one. A true meeting of genius. Two of London’s finest SynthPop outfits. The epic and enigmatic Monarchy and our favourite Capital based Frenchmen The Penelopes together on one track. The Penelopes’ have stepped up to the plate to serve up this fantastic reMix of Monarchy’s single of earlier this year, Dancing In The Corner. Here we have the end result of four of the most talented people working in electronic Pop music in one six minute bite; and boy, it does not disappoint.

The Penelopes hit the ground running with the rapid fire arpeggio that the track is driven by. Whipping up some big room sounds, the Parisian Londoner’s delver an almost EBM take on hands-in-the-air euphoria with a twisted web of musical DNA that takes in everything from Enola Gay, through 90s Trance, French Electro to contemporary Tropical tinged House in one powerhouse melting pot that Ra’s vocals glide over like silk. This is one big tune!

[Video] Rex The Dog’s ‘Sicko’

Rex The Dog’s new single, Sicko, finally turned up on 12”. So we’re happy. The single is out now on Kompakt and should be a must listen for anyone who a fan of synthesizer music.

Rex and Jake have put together this awesome video for the track. Part music clip, part live studio performance and part demonstration of Jake’s DIY RTD-001 modular synth that Sicko is played on; it’s all synth porn.

[Audio] Years & Years’ ‘Worship’

Having scored a UK number one single with King, London ElectroPoppers Years & Years can;t really be called up-and-coming or hotly tipped anymore. They have pretty much delivered what was expected of them with a storming round of festival shows last year and a string of acclaimed singles (including said #1). Earlier than we had expected, the band have just announced the forthcoming release of their début album. To be titled Communion, the LP is due to drop in June’ check out the first new album track, Worship.

Worship continues with Years & Years’ trend for mixing up ElectroPop and Indie-Electro with R&B tinged vocals from singer Olly Alexander. The track rolls on skippy beats and pseudo-Tropical keys that set a laid back, but dancefloor friendly mood for the intensely passionate track. It’s heartfelt dancy ElectroPop at it’s finest.

[Audio] Damian Lazarus & The Ancient Moons’ ‘Vermillion’

Next up on Crosstown Rebels is the new single from label head honcho Damian Lazarus. We’ve never really been too sure who The Ancient Moons are, but the track features the soulful vocals of new LA based singer Moses Sumney. Having already ranked up the honour of being one of Pete Tong’s Essential New Tunes, Vermillion is due out next month. Give it a listen below.

Kicking off in tribal fashion Vermillion is soon dousing you ears in a warm House groove. There’s an interesting combination of world percussion and twisting arpeggios that keep the tune high energy in contrast to Sumney’s breezy, laid back vocals. This is hypnotic House pulled into a Poppier arena, and it really works.
