Title track from HURTS début album

Over at Amazon.co.uk they’re giving away the title track from HURTS, insanely eagerly anticipated, début album, ‘Happiness’. But if you can’t be bothered to go grab it you can have a listen to it right hear.

Having heard the whole album I would have to say it’s nothing short of stunning, practically encompassing every influence I’d want to hear on a record. It’s very 80’s. but never once does it feel like some kind of cheap retro sideshow, just genuinely harkening back to a time with a different style of songwriting.

The title track is a bombastic Pop epic, listen and watch the hairs on your arms stand up!

HURTS new ‘Wonderful Life’ video

HURTS have just premiered the new video for the single release of ‘Wonderful Life’ and it’s pretty funny.

In a massive self-referencing in-joke the video appears to be a wake, morning the loss of the crazy dancing lady from the original ‘Wonderful Life’ video, complete with a troupe of veiled dancing girls replicating her moves.

Goodbye crazy dancing lady, you will be sorely missed…

The ‘Wonderful Life’ single drops 23rd August.

Read what we said about it here, and download it right here.

HURTS Vs. Mantronix

Surely this is too good to be true? HURTS’ ‘Wonderful Life’ reMixed by producer extraordinaire, Mantronix’s Kurtis Mantronik!

Following in the footsteps of Arthur Baker, Kurtis Mantronik is the second New York Electro Hip-Hop pioneer to tackle the song (all we need now are reMixes from Afrika Bambaata, Manny Parrish and Grandmaster Flash!) and brings a real old school Electro feel to the track, complete with Planet Rock kicks. I can’t put my finger on why ‘Wonderful Life’ lends itself so well to this kind of reMix…it just does!

HURTS cover Diana Vickers’ ‘Once’

HURTS04

This afternoon HURTS appeared on Jo Whiley’s ‘Live Lounge’ on BBC Radio 1, as well as well as an epic acoustic performance of their current single ‘Better Than Love’ the guys also covered Diana Vickers’ recent single ‘Once’.

Citing an underlying sadness in the Cathy Dennis & Eg White penned track as the reason for their choice of cover, the band (complete with, not only their opera singer, but cello and violin) belted out an intense rendition. The song had previously sent Diana Vickers (who has also worked with Ellie Goulding and Starsmith) to number one in the charts.

The band also talked about summer festivals, influences and not having a title for the August released album yet.

HURTS reMixed

Hurts

Only a matter of days now until the release of HURTS first ‘proper’ single. ‘Better Than Love’ is already getting some good airplay here in the UK (Radio1 have finally playlisted it!) so it looks promising that the single could do well.

To stave off the anticipation check out LightsOverLA’s take on the track, keeping most of the song intact they inject a little more dancefloor appeal with a heavier beat and mid-song breakdown.

HURTS mini-documentary

HURTS were recently featured on Channel4’s 4Play with an 11 minute insight into how the guys approach both the music and the visuals of HURTS, also commenting on how risky it was to release HURTS into the wild via big ‘events’ (both the EP and live show) rather than the usual oversaturation.

It’s a good watch for anyone interested in the band.

And here’s the full version of ‘Better Than Love’ from the show.

Arthur Baker turns his HURTS reMix up to 11!

ArthurBaker

He practically invented Electro Hip-Hop, synthed up New Order and was an influence on almost all forms of Electronic music, and most recently production legend Arthur Baker provided the wonderful dancefloor reMix of current SynthPop bright hopes HURTS’ début track, ‘Wonderful Life’.

Not content with that Baker has taken the core loop of his reMix and expanded it into a full on Electro banger! With only the barest hint of vocals, if ‘Wonderful Life’ was HURTS politely asking you to appreciate stuff, then this time they’re back with AB to convince you with baseball bats! That main riff is a killer!

Arthur Baker’s reMix on ‘Wonderful Life’ features on HURT’s ‘Wonderful Life’ EP, you could also do a lot worse than checking out his extensive back catalogue.

HURTS live

HURTS04

Apologies for the crappy phone-cam photo!

Y’know, this will be the first ever live review on electronic rumors, I always feel like I should (and I’m going to do more) but when I’m out, I just kinda’ like to live it up, drink the bar dry and have an awesome time dancing to some amazing music and not worrying what I might say about it on a website!

HURTS felt like more of an ‘event’ though, so here you go, have some words! I caught them live last night here in Bristol on one of the early dates of the NME Radar Tour (along with the abysmal Darwin Deez and the disappointingly average Everything Everything) and, for me at least, anticipation was high.

‘Presence’ is probably the best word to describe HURTS live. For two guys (and three backing band (keyboard player, drummer and opera singer!)) who don’t move around very much they do seem to fill up the stage. One thing I was concerned about was how po-faced and pretentious they were going to be, as that would kinda’ annoy me,  but I was surprised at how much of a good time the guys seemed to be having onstage. Yes, the sometimes tortured, sometimes apathetic persona is there in singer Theo Hutchcraft but occasionally you’ll catch a playful smile cross his face, or even an outright grin as the crowd sing the lyrics back to him.

The set was everything I had hoped, most of the EP tracks were played, opening with ‘Silver Lining’. ‘Unspoken’ was pretty perfect, and the set climaxed in a roof raising performance of the forthcoming single ‘Better Than Love’. Interestingly, in his introduction to their breakthrough hit ‘Wonderful Life’ Theo confirmed our suspicions that the song was indeed written about our fair city (there are a few obscure references to places in Bristol in the lyrics) which endeared the crowd to them more.

All in all, awesome! One of the best gigs I have been to in a while, a band hasn’t impressed me this much live since the first time I saw CHEW LiPS!

If you get the chance, definitely see HURTS live, especially if you can catch them early on in their career in some intimate venue.

HURTS ‘Better Than Love’ Video

After a couple of teasers, SynthPop rising stars HURTS have débuted the video for their forthcoming first (proper) single, the anthemic ‘Better Than Love’.

It’s a pretty slick affair, it’s kinda’ got a Ultravox vibe going on and a pleasant return to the ‘80’s school of arty mini-movie music video making.

‘Better Than Love’ drops soon, very soon!
