[Awards] The electronic rumors Awards: READER’S CHOICE

Awards2012ReadersChoice

It’s the return of the optimistically titles Reader’s Choice award.

Just to be clear, this isn’t the result of a poll, and the criteria is pretty limited, but it is a nice compilation of what was popular on electronic rumors this year. It’s a run down of the most popular downloads we’ve hosted on the site. Of course this leaves a lot of track out in the cold. track that were streaming only/non-downloadable, tracks that we were requested no to re-host for download, tracks that were only downloadable in exchange for a Facebook ‘like’, a Tweet or an email address, videos we posted, or tracks that didn’t make a post at all. But of all the track we re-hosted for download these were the most clicked on.

New Jersey based SynthWave producer TEEEL allowed us to premiere his reMix of fellow NJ resident, singer/songwriter, Ian McGlynn back in May. It’s a lush, synthy, track that boarders on Chillwave at times and seemed to go down really well with readers. Which is no surprise as it’s a passionate piece of electronic bliss.

[Awards] The electronic rumors Awards: BEST ALBUM – electronic rumors’ top 20 albums of 2012

Awards2012BestAlbum

Despite the fact that we are living in the age of the single and EP, we were overjoyed when we looked back on the year and found so many album release we had been rocking too in 2012. Which just proves to us that the album isn’t dead and true creative still want to present a body of their work as a piece of art. Some musicians still have a story to tell.

The winner is one of the most highly-rated, but under-fanfared albums of the year. The return of Australian ElectroPop heroes The Presets with their first album since 2008’s Apocalypso, Pacifica. We can’t help but feel that Modular Recordings and their PR really dropped the ball with this one. Confusing release scheduling, minimal use of social media and nonexistent use of popular music services meant that the album slipped by largely unnoticed. I have friends who love The Presets but didn’t even know they had a new album out. Which is a pity, as Pacifica is a truly stunning piece of work. An intelligent, funny in places, masterclass in ElectroPop and Dance music. Floating effortlessly from genre to genre, mood to mood, Pacifica has something for everybody as The Presets casually wander into the room and show the Indie-Electro crowd that’s cropped up in the last few years how it’s done.

[Awards] The electronic rumors Awards: BEST VIDEO

Awards2012BestVideo

Best Video. Another tough category. We’ve cheated a little this year and delivered two winners, but when it came down to these two we really couldn’t choose between them, no matter how hard we tried, so here we are with two winners.

They are two very different clips too. On the one hand we have Brooklyn based producer Starcadian and his critically acclaimed DIY effort for his track Hea^rt. Directed by Starcadian & Rob O’Neill, the Hea^rt video is a love letter to 80s VHS Sci-Fi, that also somehow manages to flow naturally with the track, the idea of being isolated in deep space acting as a perfect metaphor for the subject matter of the song itself. It’s a gentle, introspective video that deserves repeated viewings to fully absorb.

And on the other hand we have the neon soaked world of Maxime Bruneel’s video for Punks Jump Up (Feat. Dave 1)’s Mr. Overtime. A clip that is a visual treat for the eyes and an almost nightmarish ( at times) symphony of colour and shade. We cannot think of a more perfect video for this track, both visually and conceptually. I also wondered how Bruneel knew what the inside of my head looked like.

[Awards] The electronic rumors Awards: BEST REMIX – electronic rumors’ top 20 reMixes of 2012

Awards2012BestRemix

So, here we go. The first award. Like many of our top-twenties this year the final list for the Best reMix category came as much as a surprise to us than anyone. But we can’t argue with the results, these are the tracks that rocked us hard this year.

There’s more than a few tracks in here that, had you asked us in November what our list would have been, we wouldn’t have brought up. But after reviewing the tunes of the year many of them were pure “of course!” moments, including the winner.

Our love for Finnish producer Lenno has never been much of a secret. Although still criminally underrated, Lenno is making some of the finest big-room Disco in the world. I always get the feeling that Lenno is exactly what I wanted Madeon to turn out like. The big beats, the driving cut-up Disco, pumping main-room sound and the complete mastery of Pop melodies make any Lenno track perfect for peak-time dancefloors. After coming to our attention last year, this year has been pretty great for Lenno, finally making his mark on the scene with some storming reMixes for St. Lucia, Martin Solveig, Atlas Genius, Gracias X JTT and our favourite reMix of 2012, Lenno’s take on The Knocks & Fred Falke’s Geronimo. The track is Disco-House at it’s finest, full of euphoric moments and a thumping groove. We can’t wait to hear what Lenno has in store for 2013.

[Awards] The electronic rumors Awards 2012: ELECTRONIC RUMORS’ 2012

Awards2012ER

Before we begin the process of dishing out the accolades, we want to highlight for a moment a handful of artist who won’t be appearing on the lists this year.

As soon as I started to think about 2012’s Awards, I knew I couldn’t include acts we’d worked with this year. That would be all kinds of bias, but we would like to make mention of a group of musicians we are extremely proud to have worked with and what am amazing year it’s been for electronic rumors in general.

We were already working on electronic rumors Volume 1 at the start of 2012, released Ninthwave Records in the US we curated what we felt was a snapshot of music featured on the site, and a compilation of some of the most talented artists around. When the CD and Digital release happened, with a huge launch party in London  with the Human Error crew that featured Fear Of Tigers, Queen Of Hearts, Ronika, Substatic, Kid Kasio, Echoes and myself,  the response was phenomenal and spurned us to to start a record label of our own (something, in retrospect, I had been putting off for a decade or so).

♫ electronic rumors Volume 1 Minimix (Mixed By Ride The Universe)

Our first release took a while to get off the ground. It was always going to be a She’s The Queen record, they are the quintessential ElectroPop bad, flawless production and the voice of a soulful angel. As a songwriting duo they could easily be penning hits for any of the worlds major artists, and we are massively honoured to be their label. Also, we’ll be ever grateful to them for taking a chance on us in our infancy. It was a slow process, we were learning the business ropes, but we collected some amazing reMixes from Lightwaves, digitalfoxglove, Silenx and ODahl, had a video directed by the talented Aaron Alexis, and it single Talk To Me, débuted to a great deal of interest.

Next up came A Little Better from Ride The Universe. A track, Indeed a band, we had our eyes on since electronic rumors volume 1. Ride The universe are easily four of the best Dreamwave/Nu-Disco producers around, team them up with the voice of Kids At Midnight, Jane Elizabeth Hanley, and the result is one of the biggest pool-party starting tunes of the year. With a massive reMix package featuring the stellar line-up of Frankmusik, Pat Lok, Dublin Aunts, Auxiliary Tha Masterfader and Melee, Disco fans went crazy for this release. Again, we am humbled and forever grateful to Ride The Universe for having faith in us to carry such an amazing record.

♫ Ride The Universe (Feat. Jane Elizabeth Hanley) – A Little Better

Out third release of 2012 was definitely something special. We’d been talking to Californian retro ElectroPop outfit Let Em Riot for a few months about releasing something, but when we first heard the SlashWave EP we were pretty blown away and it has, more or less, soundtracked the rest of our year. Beautiful, emotional, electronic Pop music, Let Em Riot secret weapon is some of the best, cleverest, songwriting we have heard in years. With a voice and a collection of synths to pull it off, Let Em Riot was the complete package for us and makes us grin with pride when we think that we got to be part of it.

♫ Let Em Riot – Lovers & Losers

So, the label side of electronic rumors has been taking up much of our time, but the webzine is still going strong. Over 2012 out readership went up and up and everyday it is a pleasure to bring you lot the latest and greatest electronic music. A couple of features in The Guardian and much online debate later and we’re still going strong.

What humbles us most though, it you lot. Which I know sounds cheesy, but to all of you who read electronic rumors regularly, and who buy electronic rumors releases, we are so grateful. More than we could put into words, but seriously, without you none of this would be happening. I hope we can live up to the loyalty you’ve shown us in 2012 going into the future.

We’ve got some amazing stuff lined up for 2013, both for the website and most of all for the label, some stuff we can’t talk about now, but you can be sure, we’ve only just begun with this shit!

Thank you all so much!

[Awards] The electronic rumors Awards 2012

Awards2012

As we wrap up shenanigans on our Google+ page, it’s time to kick things off properly.

Welcome to the 2012 electronic rumors Awards*!

As ever, these top twenties, and the winners, were incredibly hard to compile. Despite how some may have been bemoaning it has been a great year for electronic music and choosing just twenty of the best songs, remixes and albums released this year was, at times, a painful feat (at one point there were sixty-four ‘best songs’), but we did out best and are pretty happy with the results.

As ever, I’m sure there is stuff we missed, a tune someone will mention or a tune that we’ll remember and we’ll suddenly kick ourselves for not including it, but what’s done is done, let’s all just live with it, OK?

So, without further ado, let the Awards begin!

*It’s a black tie event BTW!
