Last month leftfield DiscoPop queen Róisín Murphy announced her forthcoming new album, Hairless Toys, with a sneak peek at the first single from the record, Gone Fishing. In parallel to this, though, she’s teamed up with DJ Parrot (of Sweet Exorcist and The All Seeing I fame) for a one off release via Crosstown Rebels of this storming floorfiller, Jealousy. Due out next week, the tune was premièred by Annie Mac last week, check it out.
Whereas as the album allows Murphy to flex her musical muscles (she always injects her dance music with a certain avant garde quality) this single is right at home on Crosstown Rebels, being a pure club experience. Jealousy is a stripped back tune, distilled dancefloor ingredients, where Róisín’s vocals ride over eight minutes of a punchy House bass infused hypnotic groove. It’s not until the halfway point that the track really lets loose, adding an electric piano hook and a rising vocal arrangement to the mix. The whole affair has got a classic sound, due in part to Róisín’s vocals, which are so much a part of UK dance music history, and would slot neatly into almost any set.
