[Audio] Only You’s début EP

New Jersey based  retro Popster Only You has been on our radar for a while now. First coming to our attention back in October last year, this one man band has been steadily letting loose a selection of slickly producer, retro, Pop tunes and is now ready to collect them all, alongside some new material, on his début EP, Another World.

Released this week, the Another World EP hold five storming tracks. Thee of which we’ve covered before; Secrets, The Starchild and the EPs highlight Reap The Voice You’ve Made, alongside two brand new tunes. The EP opens with it’s title track, and the releases only instrumental. Another World eases you into the tone of the album gently. A swirl of lush synth sounds rush around the track, pinned down by vintage drum sounds and a pair of intertwining melodies that wrap around each other like smoke. I would have been concerned about kicking off the EP with an instrumental, but am proved wrong as Another World introduced you to the EP’s nostalgic 80s tone. Where Will I Be? is the calm before the album plays out on Reap The Voice You’ve Made. An anthemic lament set to driving arpeggios and sparkling lead lines. The guitar feels slightly out of place here, especially against the Italo bassline, but it doesn’t feature much so it’s all good.repertoire. Where Will I Be? is a welcome addition to Only You’s repertoire. In the current climate of male vocaled retro Pop releases (i.e. a surprisingly large amount of them ), Only You had done an excellent job of carving out a coroner of the niece for himself. We look forward to more.

Only You

Here’s the new one from retro Pop artist Only You. He’s released three songs so far, and earned three posts on electronic rumors, that a 100% conversion rate so far! This New Jersey based producer consistently impresses with his slick 80s style ElectroPop tracks. With a slight Americana twist, and heaps of nostalgia, his tunes always brighten out day.

Once again his latest track, Reap The Voice You’ve Made, shows off his rich, expertly crafted, songs. And epic vocal performance, introspective and intimate in the verses, powerful and anthemic in the choruses, raises this track up. Accompanied by authentically period drums and bassline and some shimmering synth lines, the whole track comes together to form an exciting, uplifting experience. Some of the best ElectroPop around.

A couple of months ago we featured New Jersey retro Pop artist Only You, who came from nowhere, with just one song, but impressed the hell out of us with his slick, personal, take on vintage Pop music. Now here comes track number two which is, dare we say it, even more catchy and a hint more anthemic.

The Starchild continues Only You’s quest to capture the best of 80s American SynthPop. It’s got everything you’d want in a retro Pop track, punchy drums, appreciated bass, shimmering lead lines and razor sharp chords, with Only You’s vocals, this time round, taking on a big, stadium Pop, quality. You can just imaging rows of screaming teens in big hair singing along on old VHS concert footage. There’s only really a handful of artist who get 80s Pop completely right. Kid Kasio, Patrick Barker and the like, Only You has definitely joined their ranks.

When music is just thrust upon us with no introduction, it can be hard to muster up the enthusiasm to even listen to it, in the flood of promo material we receive every single day making yourself stand out is pretty important. But sometimes we have a little more time on our hands, or are just feeling intrepid, and dive on in to random track. This time around we are extremely glad we took the plunge with American retro Pop outfit Only You, who sole track, Secrets, is a pretty stunning début.

Secrets is an amazingly slick, and well produced, slab of 80s Pop. Changeling the best in mid-80s American SynthPop, it’s got that big production sheen that at the time you could only get from multi-million dollar 48 track studios, and even on todays technology still requires a hint of talent to recreate. the track is layered with rich vintage synth sounds, with multiple pads and lead lines weaving in and out of one another. It’s the vocal on Secrets that makes the track really shine, though. Not only is it lyrically a lot of fun, but the vocal performance is pitch perfect 80s Pop, right down to call-and-response backing vocals in the chorus. And the way the vocals play off against the sparking leads and bouncy post-Italo bassline make the song a fantastic slice of nostalgia. This is 80s Pop done properly.
