Ride The Universe’s reMix of Chromeo’s ‘Hot Mess’

Y’all can stop making reMixes of Chromeo’s ‘Hot Mess’ now! Ride The Universe  are in the house!

This is what Chromeo mixes should sound like. Like someone drove a dump truck full of synth Funk up to your house and deposited it’s cargo on your doorstep. Just listen to that talkbox riff, pure, addictive, genius! This track’s got everything you want to get the party started. Driving arpeggios to keep the energy up, the aforementioned talkbox riff, sweet 80′s chords and a wailing guitar to keep you inspired (take the Chromeo vocal track off the mix and it would make a very cool training montage track!). It feels like digitalfoxglove and the Fiero boys have really found their sound now and are really to step up to the plate and pate their place amongst the big hitters of Disco (was that two Baseball metaphors in one sentence? I’m English, I don’t even know what Baseball is!), melding 80’s soundtrack epicness with solid Disco grooves RTU are gonna’ be a force to be reckoned with. Like a sexy 80′s cop show theme with aspirations of tearing up the dancefloor this track this tune has something for everyone.

Now that track is going to rock your summer!

Chromeo reMixed by Sonic Soul

To say the world was inundated with reMixes of Chromeo’s ‘Hot Mess’ right now would be an understatement, so standing out it quite a job!

Sonic Soul are up for that challenge. Their reMix of ‘Hot Mess’ has more Funk than a dump truck full of Funk driving up to Bootsy Collins house and dumped in his driveway. The duo of Andrew Napoleon and Leon Watson from the North East UK put the whole package into their reMix, a nice build, some awesome layered 80’s synth Funk with some real smooth riffs and our beloved electro toms, all of this working seamlessly with Dave 1’s vocals. They’ve added a sweet call-and-response vocoded finale too.

Chromeo will drive you home…

Read this first!

A couple of days got I got this phone, a Nokia N8, in the post.

I was gonna’ tell you all about it and my speculation tomorrow (I’ve already done lot of posting today) but Chromeo have just confirmed my suspicions on Twitter, so, well, the cat’s out of the bag.

The phone, besides featuring a lovely Chromeo wallpaper, was pre loaded with Chromeo’s new voicepack for Nokia’s Own Voice SatNav app. That’s right, the 55 tiny songs on ‘Drive Time’ are actually SatNav directions. Chromeo can drive you home!

With Nokia’s Own Voice system for their Ovi Maps SatNav you can record you own directional commands, or just let Chromeo funk you to your destination.

But it’s not as simple as that, the songs/directions themselves are crafted in such a way that whatever your route they make up a complete piece of music, if you see what I mean. Tracks like “Turn Left” and “Destination” flow together on your journey into directions and music. I know, it sounds ridiculous, and feels pretty ridiculous to type, but I still stand by my original comment that these songs/directions are actually really good! If they were to release an album I would buy it!

Which they’re not…and that makes me feel all the more privileged to own one of these:

Check out the whole version of the ‘documentary’, including the SatNav directions in action. I can’t wait to try out the phone on the road!

Regardless of whether the album will, or does, exist, even if this is just a piece of marketing for a SatNav system that lets you record your own directions, it’s genius. For a start, musically, Chromeo have done an amazing (and, I can imagine tough) job on these ‘songs’ and the concept and they way Nokia have presented it has been clever too. Most people I know have been guessing all week. Am I disappointed that Chromeo aren’t making the worlds smallest record? A little, but not much, this week we’ve been kinda’ fun, tiny records an all.

Own Voice sounds like a cool little system too, one you could get really creative with, movie samples, vocoding, you could really make trips up north a bit more fun. And if you did it in your own voice when it led you astray (as Sat Navs are wont to do) then you’d have no-one to blame but yourself!

Of Course, if you REALLY want those tunes, and you are the owner of a Nokia N8, you can download Chromeo’s Own Voice directions, or ‘Drive Time’ in our little world, for free at nokiaownvoice/chromeo.

Disclaimer (‘cos I know Americans get pissy about it): Yes, I was given a Nokia N8, preloaded with Chromeo’s Own Voice sound pack, before writing this post. It’s OK, but it’s not like it’s going to replace my HTC Desire HD, I’m an Android kinda’ guy. Badass camera on the N8 though and a  nice collectors item too.

Chromeo’s ‘Drive Time’…the smallest record ever made!

This week we received, in the post, a copy of ‘Drive Time’, Chromeo’s new record.

And it’s a new record in more ways than one.

First, it is a record. I know I call everything ‘a record’, but that’s just ‘cos I’m old, ‘Drive Time’ is actually a vinyl release and secondly it is a new record in the sense that it has absolutely smashed any and all previous world record holders for the smallest record ever made!

Tiny!

That’s just the promo! The full album will clock in at just over three minutes and a mind boggling 55 tracks. With those kinds of numbers ‘Drive Time’ laughs in the face of the previous smallest record’s length. That of Cattle Decapitation’s ‘Human Jerky’, a yawn inducing 12m36s.

Also, for the first time the album sees Chromeo’s music taking on a political theme in the lead track, the thoughtfully titled ‘Turn Left’, albeit rolled up in their Electro-Disco-Pop-Funk.

Take a look at this video of the guys and legendary producer Dave Bascombe working on the project. Dave and P speak about their motives and inspiration.

So, what does it actually sound like?

Well, it’s good, short, but good. It’s amazing how in, sometimes as short a time as a few seconds (or the lead track, ‘Turn Left’s ONE SECOND!), each track is unmistakably Chromeo.

Each track could have quite easily been a joke. I have never heard the previous record holder but I presume it was some kind of Death Metal album and each track was just a brief noise, well with ’Drive Time’ each track has actually been written. Take ‘Follow’ for example, in it’s seven seconds, there is a distinct bass riff, vocal harmonies, a chord progression and a lead line. In seven seconds!

Have a (brief) listen.

See what I mean, it actually sounds like Chromeo!

Oliver

A month or so ago I completely missed out on posting a couple of tracks by Oliver, they just slipped though the net and I never got round to it. Which is a pity as they were on my mp3 player pretty heavily. This week they dropped a couple of new reMixes, that allows me the opportunity to make up for it.

The two Olivers in Oliver are Vaughn Oliver (U-Tern) and Oliver Goldstein (Oligee), awesome producers and reMixers in their own rights, who have teamed up to drop some funky Nu-Disco on the masses. Their first new tracks, ‘All Night’ and ‘Walk With Me’ , boast the most powerful of power 80’s synth chords atop some slammin’ Disco grooves. ‘All Night’, particularly, is like Filter House and Dreamwave wrestling naked in jelly while ‘Walk With Me’ is slightly more cinematic, in the sense that you can’t listen to it without imagining a bunch of kids dancing in the street in legwarmers.

Oliver – All Night

Oliver – Walk With Me

This week Oliver let loose two reMixes. The first, of  Dance-Pop act Black Cards’ new single ‘Dominoes’ is pure Robo-Disco, as if Kraftwerk made Nu-Disco while playing Nintendo and their truly epic reMix of Chromeo’s forthcoming ‘Hot Mess’ single, which is spine-tinglingly good and has a power riff that has to be heard to be believed.

Chromeo + La Roux + Duck Sauce = Party!

We posted a really shitty rip of the Duck Sauce reMix of Chromeo’s version of ‘Hot Mess’  featuring with Elly Jackson from La Roux a while back and while we don’t usually post tracks twice this tune really needs to be heard in it’s entirety.

Duck Sauce is, of course, Armand Van Helden and Chromeo’s Dave 1’s brother and nearly legendary producer A-Track and together they knock out a massive House reMix, I imagine you’ll be hearing this track a lot when it drops later this month.

Chromeo (Feat. Elly Jackson From La Roux) – Hot Mess (Duck Sauce reMix)

The ‘Hot Mess’ single is out 17th January and along with the original and the new duet features reMixes from the likes of Duck Sauce and Tiga.

Chromeo and La Roux; The 12inch Mix

No longer do you have to be content with our radio rip of Chromeo’s massive duet with Elly Jackson from La Roux, here we have the full 12inch Mix!

We gave our impressions of the track in the original post, those opinions are only strengthened by the full track, it works so well it’s getting hard to remember how it was with out Elly’s counterpoint. Her part is so simple too, but that’s the beauty of it.

Anyway, here it is, enjoy. You will!

Listen to Chromeo & La Roux’s ‘Hot Mess’ team-up!

So here it is! The internet’s been chatting all week about Chromeo’s forthcoming single ‘Hot Mess’ which features a version of the track laid out as a duet with La Roux’s Elly Jackson and now we can finally hear it.

Annie Mac, in her awesomeness, premiered the song on her Radio 1 show last night and yours truly ripped it for you all to have a little taster. The back and forth vocals aren’t what I was expecting. I was expecting something simple and, almost, tacked on, but Elly’s parts seem both fresh and like they have been there forever. You wouldn’t necessarily think that Elly’s stark vocals would sit well with Chromeo’s slick Electro Funk, but it really does! Colour me impressed!

This might well be the last time we hear Elly’s unique vocals on an ElectroPop track. Despite riding high in the American dance charts with her US re-release of ‘In For The Kill’, Mz. Jackson has stated she wants to move on from synth music. Damn shame really, another one bites the dust, so enjoy this while you can!

Chromeo premiere ‘Hot Mess’ video

I’m still reeling from Chromeo’s mind-blowingly awesome live show in Bristol last week, I’ve seen a lot of gigs this year and this was probably the best.

One week later and the duo drop the video for their forthcoming single ‘Hot Mess’, taken from their current album ‘Business Casual’. The video, directed by Jérémie Rozan,  see Dave and Pee struggling to make it as cops in a woman’s world…a sexy woman’s world!

The single is out 17th January and, as I’m sure you’re all aware of by now, will feature a duet version of the track with La Roux’s Elly Jackson and contains reMixes from the likes of Duck Sauce and Tiga.

Chromeo; ‘Don’t Turn The Lights On’ reMix

Christian Martin’s reMix of Chromeo’s current single is a weird beast, performing the seeming impossible takes of stripping the funk without loosing the vibe.

Pure deep Electro, the mix is still a late night, seductive, jam but the funk Guitar is replaces with techy, but smooth, synths. If you’re going to replace Chromeo’s funk with anything then that fat analog bass is a good call!
