[Awards] The electronic rumors Awards: BEST SONG – electronic rumors’ top 20 songs of 2013

Awards2013Song

Here’s the big one! In a year that was shifted in favour of excellent albums, there were still a heap of songs that stood out from the pack. The top songs of the year came from a multitude of genres, so if you’re looking for ‘the best of Disco’ or ‘the best of ElectroPop’ you’re not going to find it here, but these outfits were making some standout, human, emotional electronic music this year.

Twelve months is a long time, so, as ever, we probably missed something rounding up the year. Apologies to the missing, or the overlooked. But what’s done is done, and we’re happy with the end result.

So, our winner, London based Disco master Blende, came as a surprise to ourselves as much as anyone. Unlike last year where we had out big tunes in out head, this year our attention was taken mostly by albums, so we didn’t have any definite choices in mind when reviewing the year’s singles. However, as soon as 72 tracks were whittled down to 20, and then put in order, like a ray of light it became glaringly obvious that Blende’s Rikki was the tune we rocked hardest to, and had on repeat the longest, in the last twelve months. An utterly infectious, funky as all hell, Rikki combined a dancefloor compulsion with Pop catchiness. Which is absolutely perfect for us. It couldn’t have been anything else really.

[Awards] The electronic rumors Awards: HALL OF FAME – electronic rumors’ Hall Of Fame inductee 2013

Awards2013HallOfFame

Long-time readers will be very aware that we make no secret of our love of electronic music pioneers Cabaret Voltaire. It was only a matter of time before they joined Kraftwerk, The Human League and Daft Punk in the electronic rumors Hall Of Fame. Cabaret Voltaire seem to have been with me my whole life, whatever music we have been into at any given time, all roads lead back to the Cabs.

Hailing from that electronic music mecca, Sheffield, Cabaret Voltaire were always on the cutting edge of production. From their inception in 1973 as a Dada-influenced art group to their early 90s experiments with House and Techno, Richard H. Kirk and Stephen Mallinder always had a place in musical royalty. Their early, experimental electronic material, for example, is massively influential on everything from Industrial to SynthPop to Electroclash. Their journeys through the world of Dub spawned untold Techno and Ambient outfits and they rode the club wave on the cutting edge of the UK House scene. Not just genre chameleons though, the Cabs were technical innovators too, using synths and electronics in ground-breaking ways that would become commonplace years later. But, on top of it all, though all the noise and acclaim and abrasion, Kirk and Mallinder always seems to know how to write a really good song. It’s hard to be catchy when everything sounds like a distorted machine gun, or when everything is hypnotic synth loops, but these guys managed to do it. It feels odd trying to write about the Cabs, they have been academically studied to death and we can’t do any better, suffice to say that without them there would be no electronic rumors.

Awards2013Album

This was a no brainer for us. If you follow us on Twitter or Google+ you’ll have a pretty good idea of who’s taking home the award right here. We did gush about it quite a bit just before it was released. Still, it’s not like the competition was weak, we recently took to Twitter to call the runner up here ‘one of the greatest living producers today’.

In fact, the result of this category just goes to show that 2013 really was the year of the album. Some stunning full-length records were releases too. The entire top ten on this list are all absolutely essential bodies of work. Any fan of electronic music should without question own each of these records. They say the album format is dead, 2013 begs to differ.

So, what haven’t we already said about Glaswegian ElectroPoppers Chvrches’ début album The Bones Of What You Believe? You can read our full review of the record here, where we just harp on and on about how they don’t make records like this anymore. Our review pretty much sums up how we feel about this album, and in the four months it’s been out barely a day has gone by when we haven’t dipped into it. No album in recent years has moved us musically, and emotionally, anywhere near the amount The Bones Of What You Believe has. To quote our review; “Chvrches’ album is fucking stunning!”. From the first play, there was never any doubt who would top of the Best Album list.

[Awards] The electronic rumors Awards: READER’S CHOICE 2013

Awards2013ReadersChoice

Wow, our optimistically titled Reader’s Choice award is getting harder and harder to compile. It’s always been a bit vague but as the years go by it’s getting tougher.

So, as you know by now, this isn’t the result of a poll. Back when we started it was the most downloaded tracks from the year. But as more and more tracks shifted to SoundCloud, and then our download links went 90% SoundCloud based it’s harder to glean from our state what people have been clicking on. Also, purely streaming tracks, track downloadable in exchange for a Tweet or a Like, video, mostly didn’t make the list. So if you could call this list anything, you can call it the Tracks-We-Can-See-From-Our-Stats-Were-Most-Clicked-On-Award. Reader’s Choice is rolls of the tongue better though.

The top tune was a total surprise. It was actually a track we’d forgotten about, but a good track nonetheless. It can to us via one of our favourite publicists as the work of her next-door neighbour, but turned out to be deservedly popular. A unique reMix that doesn’t conform to any one genre but works in so many areas.

[Awards] The electronic rumors Awards: BEST VIDEO of 2013

Awards2013Video

This is the fifth annual electronic rumors Awards, so with five years under our belt we’re pretty sure we can go ‘woah’ when someone taken an award two ears running. But the man Starcadian is back to rule the Best Video category with his clip for Chinatown.

Chinatown has the same stunningly professional, yet actually DIY, vibe that we loved from last year’s winner Hea^rt. Once again Starcadian himself teams-up with Rob O’Neill to give us a tiny, tantalising, taste of the imaginary movie Sunset Blood (who’s soundtrack Starcadian released this year and Chinatown is taken from). A neon drenched dystopia, like a Disco version of BladeRunner’s LA, serves as the black drop for Sgt. Tagowski’s hunt for the mysterious Starcadian cyborg thing and his digitising floppy disk. The video has both a narrative and slick Pop video direction, that leaves you wanting more. Also, there’s a cameo from Hea^rt’s star-traveller too,

[Awards] The electronic rumors Awards: BEST REMIX – electronic rumors’ top 20 reMixes of 2013

Awards2013Remix

reMixes! Our first proper award of the night. The winner of this year’s Best reMix just nipped in at the last minute, being a recent release. But it was hard to deny that it was going to take the prize as soon as we heard it.

There’s so much talent in this list. It was pretty hard to stand out this year, with so many big album releases going on, reMixes seemed to fall by the wayside sometimes. Also the proliferation of the dreaded ‘reMix context’ meant listeners ears were assailed with so much junk the word ‘reMix’ began to strike fear in their hearts. Still, the cream always rises to the top, and this list really does represent the cream.

British producer Ikonika began life making melodic and intricate tunes for Hyperdub but in recent times has turned her attention to something a little more funky, and a little more retro. Her reMix of Glaswegian SynthPop saviours Chvrches’ début track, Lies, for the recently re-released reMix package is pretty much everything we want in a track. Severely focused on Boogie, the tune is all B-boy beats, orchestral stabs, squealing synth riffs and the best of 80s electronic Soul and Pop loaded up in a groove cannon and aimed squarely at contemporary dancefloors. The past month and a half have been all about this track here at electronic rumors HQ.

[Awards] The electronic rumors Awards: ELECTRONIC RUMORS’ 2013

Awards2013ER

So, the trade-off of being signed to the hugely acclaimed and trend setting electronic rumors Records is that you immediately become disqualified from placing in the prestigious electronic rumors Awards. I know, right? It’s a tough decision between being on the world’s hippest label, or being ranked in the world’s most influential charts.

Those that do decide to sign on the dotted line become part of the electronic rumors family, and although we can’t list them in our end of year round-ups (there would be far too much weird bias going on there), we can drop a couple of paragraphs about how awesome each and every one of them is and how the electronic rumors Crew’s year has been.

We kicked things off in February on the one year anniversary of the compilation that started it all, electronic rumors Volume 1, with the release of electronic rumors Volume 1: The reMix EP. Four artists who appeared on the compilation (Queen Of Hearts, Ronika, Kid Kasio & Echoes) had their compilation contributed tracks reMixes by four other artists who appeared on the compilation (Substatic, She’s The Queen, LexiconDon & beaumont). The results were ecclectic, occasionally surprising, and all-round funky as hell.

♫ Ronika – Wiyoo (Substatic reMix)

Then, completely out of the blue, came the amazing Canadian producer Box Of Wolves and his collaboration with Christa Vi, Boy. A tune that came to us at just the right time, it was exactly what we were looking for. Cool, edgy Pop with a raw Disco feel and heaps of enigmatic charm. Back with reMixes from Toronto’s Cyclist and Tongan producer Summer Occasion it was a killer release.

♫ Box Of Wolves & Christa Vi – Boy

Again, stretching out genre muscles we chanced upon London based Indie-Dreamwave duo New Arcades and hooked up with them for the release of their début, self titled EP. Being released in June, this was just what the summer ordered with six tracks of breezy, nostalgic, emotional, urban ElectroPop.

♫ New Arcades – Into The Skyline

electronic rumors’ original gangsters She’s The Queen returned in July with a double A-side single announcing to the world they had big things planned. Two storming Pop songs, in two very different styles, Cold Heart/I Don’t Wanna Know definitely sets up the New York duo for a massive 2014.

♫ She’s The Queen – Cold Heart

Disco dark horse beaumont finally let us release the Elle Pierre featuring Vampire in September. With a massive reMix line-up consisting of Clancy, StardonE, BeatLoaf and Helmut Schelsky this was our dancefloor destroying release of the year. It still sends shivers down our spines when the bassline kicks in.

♫ beaumont (Feat. Elle Pierre) – Vampire

electronic rumors staples She’s The Queen & Let Em Riot got cosy in November to release a free double A-Side single. Fantasy/There U Go featured to tracks from these talented artists archives as a little thank you to the fans who have supported them over 2013. And two storming tracks they were too. Either one could have easily been a single release in it’s own right, bt you can get both for free!

♫ Let Em Riot – There U Go

We tried to do a little good with our final release of 2013. X-Mas Rumors came out the week before X-Mas after some incredibly last minute production work from the artists as they generously leant their time to a shot notice charity EP we put together. electronic rumors newcomers Kids At Midnight joined Let Em Riot, She’s The Queen and beaumont in covering their favourite X-Mas songs with 100% of the EPs pay-what-you-want revenue going to The Alzheimer’s Society. By X-mas day we could donate a healthy chunk of change of this very worthy charity thanks to some amazing fans supporting both the music and the cause. It was the best X-Mas present we could have received.

♫ Kids At Midnight – Last Christmas

Of course the WebZine is still going strong too, against all odds, but once again we want to thank you lot. You who read. You who buy releases. You who keep us going. Without you we are all nothing, consider yourselves family too.

Things got a little hectic toward the end of 2013 so a few releases were pushed back to 2014. So as we come into the new year expect some massive stuff from Kids At Midnight, Box Of Wolves, Freak You, Ali Jamieson and The Sanfernando Sound & Kid Kasio, just for starters.

We love you all.

Awards2013

So, as a hush descends over the room, conversations trail off into awes silence, the lights dim and it’s time to start the show.

With red carpet shenanigans now behind us, everybody having strutted their stuff in their finest trappings, all that’s left is impatient anticipation….

Welcome to The electronic rumors Awards 2013!

Although it now goes without saying, the following list were pant-shittingly hard to compile. What soon became clear was that 2013 was very much a year of albums. Some stunning full length records were released this year, mostly overshadowing single releases in terms of hype. It was also, weirdly, a year of emperor’s-new-clothes releases. Over-hyped marketing extravaganzas that everybody felt they had to say they liked for fear of being seen as uncool. There were a whole bunch of albums that blew up and rightly deserved it, but an equal amount that were just the product of clever PR strategies and lazy music journalism.

But, whatever. Each to their own. These are our lists anyway. Like it or not, this is what floated our boat in 2013. As ever, we probably forgot something important, overlooked something from the start of the year, but whatcha’ gonna’ do? If we have forgotten something; no-one will be more pissed than us. So let’s just not mention it, eh?

Oh. There’s the drum roll. Get comfy, we’re about it begin…

Phew! Well, that was a rollercoaster. The highs! The lows! The winners! Those who walk away empty handed! It’s all too much to bear! The face of electronic music has changed forever and once again a golden Keytar Axeman has been the bringer of dreams, and the shatterer of hopes.

Thankfully that time has come again, y’know the one, the time when we all loosen our collective bow-ties and sip the last of the champagne. The time when we reflect on this year’s proceedings and who’s lives have been totally altered by the electronic rumors Awards 2012
