Metronomy cover The Cure (+ Lady Sovereign)

metronomy

This weeks copy of NME, the big NME Shockwaves Awards 2009 issue, come with a free CD featuring some of the leading lights of today’s indie scene covering tracks by The Cure (who received the “God-like Genius” award)

The CD includes this cover of ‘Fascination Street’ by UK ElectroPoppers Metronomy, which is kinda’ odd:

Metronomy – Fascination Street (The Cure Cover) (zShare) (MediaFire)

While we’re on the subject of The Cure covers I have to lay this on you.

Lady Sovereign – So Human (Original Version) (zShare) (MediaFire)

Lady Sovereign‘s next single is ‘So Human’ and completely riffs off The Cure’s ‘Close To Me’. I would say around 99% of The Cure fans I know will be vomiting blood upon hearing this track, but I kinda’ like it!

Curses! Holy Ghost!

curses1

Institubes are taking over! And it looks like their method will be mind control!

Exhibit A: This track, ‘The Deep End’, the new one from Curses! (better known as Drop The Lime) as reMixed by Holy Ghost!.

It’s an eight minute Disco odyssey that worms it way into your brain. When you start listening to it you’re thinking “yeah, it’s got a good groove”…by the end, IT’S YOUR WHOLE LIFE!

The infections bassline hypnotizes you into submission and then, around 6:50 minutes in, it drops the synth shredding on you.

Epic Electro-House from Deluce

deluce

Deluce is the next new, young, Electro-House producer from France in the line.

He creates spacy, 80′s influenced, Electro journeys that owe as much to Jean-Michel Jarre and Vangelis as to Danger or Kavinsky.

Wrap you ears ’round these two tracks he has dropped…

Deluce – Lead The Galaxy (zShare) (MediaFire)

…and go give him some MySpace lovin’:

Parralox, human after all

parralox

Parralox, currently Australia’s finest purveyors of pure SynthPop, have dropped a new track on their MySpace.

‘I Am Human’ is the second song recorded for Parralox’s forthcoming new album and shows a more upbeat side to the band.

Parralox – I Am Human (zShare) (MediaFire)

You should go check out Parralox’s first album, the amazing ‘Electricity’, right about…now!

Marina And The Diamonds

marinaandthediamondsSo…everyone’s talking about Marina And The Diamonds, I gotta say at first I was pretty resistant but the more I listen the more it appeals to the part of me that loves Tori Amos, at least on this track, ‘Obsessions’ she does, elsewhere the tracks are more upbeat and new wave influenced.

Marina And The Diamonds – Obessions (zShare) (MediaFire)

But it’s the reMixes that really shine. Here Pinkstallone deliver a cool, 80′s sounding, laid back Italo reMix with a rolling synth bass groove and The Aspirins For My Children up the Electro-ante with their interpretation.

A couple of new videos

Busy day today, you you can entertain yourselves with two new videos that have made their début this week.

First up is the poptastic clip for Frankmusik‘s forthcoming single ‘Better Off As Two’.

Also, we have the space invader fuelled video for Røyksopp‘s now on ‘Happy Up Here’. Directed by Reuben Sutherland, this is, like most of Røyksopp’s videos, something special.

Normal service will resume.

Phil Oakey gets around

philoakey1

News has broken this week that, Electro legend, The Human League’s Phil Oakey will be providing guest vocals for two SynthPop superstars.

First up, Pet Shop Boys have confirmed that Philip will be will appear on  ‘This Used To Be The Future’ which will be on the limited edition 2 CD version of their forthcoming album, ‘Yes’.

Oakey has also recorded a duet, entitled ‘Symmetry’, with none other than Electro girl-of-the-moment Little Boots! It will appear on her, soon to be released, album. Apparently Phil approached Victoria after hearing her ‘funtime’ cover of ‘Don’t You Want Me’ on YouTube.

I love Phil’s vocals, he may not be the best singer in the world but he has a tone that lends itself perfectly to everything he does.

Both of these collabarations with top Electro acts have me salivating…can’t wait!

Depeche Mode premiere ‘Wrong’ video

Depeche Mode have just premièred the video for the eagerly awaited upcoming single ‘Wrong’.

It’s a slightly creepy, intense mini movie. I love DM’s ‘cameo’ appearance.

Actually, I really like the song. Some of the synths in there sound like ”Masses’ or ‘Violator’ Mode. Maybe it’s true, maybe we have got the old Mode back.

Where’s Alan?

Video Villain

videovillain

It strikes this blogger that New Wave band Dead Disco splitting up was one of the best things to happen to UK music in the past few years. On the one hand it gave us Little Boots, and on the other it allowed Marie and Lucy to follow their own path.

That path is Video Villain, who’s demo. I am absolutely loving.

A combination of noisy beats and low-fi synth work provide the backing for some seriously catchy songs, which culminates in something that somehow manages to be raw and harsh yet at the same time incredibly poppy.

There’s nothing really to compare VV to, you’ll hear bits of Curve, maybe bits of Crystal Castles, but the girls have got more of a cool, rock ‘n’ roll, swagger to them. Imagine a bunch of late 70′s New York punks locked in a room with a couple of Korg MS-20′s…

Visit their MySpace page to sample some tracks  from Video Villian’s demo.:

And check this reMix of ‘Low’ from Modernaire:

Video Villain – Low (Modernaire reMix) (zShare) (MediaFire)

My wish for Video Villain is that when they get signed (and they will get signed) the lucky label doesn’t get some producer to polish them up.

Dirty, grungy Electronica all the way!

Currently unsigned (a travesty!), head on over to their MySpace to show them some love and while you’re there pick up a copy of their limited edition demo..
